THE TOP STORY FROM FP
[The Shocking Enormity of Russia’s Botched Pandemic Response](
A massive third wave is spreading unchecked, anti-vaxxers are rampant, and the Kremlin’s vaccine diplomacy has failed.
[russia-covid-pandemic-sputnik-vaccine-third-wave] Russia is firmly in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic’s third wave. Every day, there are about 22,000 reported new infections—twice as many as during the peak of the first wave in May 2020—and more than 600 deaths. The new delta variant of the virus, which Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said is responsible for 90 percent of new infections in the Russian capital, has caught Russia almost completely unawares. Now, the campaign for parliamentary elections in September could make fighting the pandemic even harder, since the ruling United Russia party may be even more reluctant to impose unpopular measures like lockdowns. [FP Live: The New Economics Playbook](
July 15 | 11 a.m. EDT
Join FP and leading economists as they discuss the global economy for the new, post-pandemic era. This call is available exclusively to FP subscribers. After the financial crisis and COVID-19, decades of economic orthodoxy are being thrown out as the world rearranges itself. For our summer issue and to help us think about what comes next, FP asked leading economists and thinkers to describe the new, post-pandemic era. We also asked them to give it a name. FP senior advisor Antoine Van Agtmael, who coined the term “emerging markets,” has done it again with his pithy summation of the West’s conviction that it can spend itself out of trouble: Fuzzynomics. As governments try out novel ways to contain the pressures of inflation, professor Stephanie Kelton dubs this the “experimental economy.” And FP senior correspondent Michael Hirsh offers up Bidenomics, a new form of economic nationalism. Don’t miss these guests in conversation with FP’s editor in chief, Ravi Agrawal, on how to define these unprecedented times.
