#[Mark Simonson](
Featured FOUNDRY: [Mark Simonson](
Before there was Mark Simonson Studio, there was Mark Simonson freelance designer. Although he drew his first typeface in the late 1970s, shortly after graduation from design school, Simonson spent the first part of his career as an art director and graphic designer. Working in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, paying gigs for the likes of Garrison Keillor, took precedence over speculative typeface design projects.
But then the type bug bit him again. âIn the early 1990s, I was working at a magazine that used Gill Sans as a house design,â he explains. âI love Gill Sans, but I wanted something that was a little bit plainer. I didnât want to use Helvetica or something like that, however, because itâs so overused. I was thinking, âwhat if I had something that was sort of like Helvetica in a way, but a little bit more geometric and didnât have its European overtones.â This was the beginning of [Proxima Novaâ¢]( family.
But Proxima Nova wasnât to be Simonsonâs first commercial typeface. That would fall to [Felt Tip Roman]( an adaptation of his own handwriting. Simonson began to sell fonts of the design in 1992. Shortly thereafter he founded Mark Simonson Studio with the intention of doing lettering, illustration and typeface design. From these beginnings, Simonson has gone on to design a bevy of typefaces â including the many flavors of Proxima Nova.
The studio has also released the Art Deco [Mostra Nouvaâ¢]( the sturdy serifed [Kandalâ¢]( and the chubby [Snickerâ¢]( family. The [Bookmaniaâ¢]( series pays homage to the Bookman craze of the late 1960s and early 1970s, while [Coquetteâ¢]( is a delightful upright script.
And thereâs more to come. After a hiatus of sorts, (typographic pun intended) Simonson is working on several new designs. âIâm excited to be finally working on new stuff again,â he says. âNo promises on exactly when anything will be released, but Iâm hoping to get several things out this year.â (Keep an eye out for them.)

Featured designer: [Carl Crossgrove](
Carl Crossgrove’s love of the graphic arts began as an adolescent infatuation and grew into a life-long love affair. “I started exploring book arts, ceramics, botanical illustration, drawing and painting in high school,” he recalls. “In college, I studied the fine arts: drawing, painting and printmaking. After two years, however, language, and printing became my passion. My eventual degree was in printing, with a concentration in typography – which brought me full-circle back to the book arts.”
After college, Crossgrove had a variety of jobs – all in the graphics industry. This included advertising agencies, small graphic design studios, and the design departments of several magazines. Staying true to his passion, however, he also designed typefaces in his free time. “It was during this time I drew [Minska]( for ITC, [Origami]( for Monotype, and [Reliq]( for Adobe.” I had a regular job doing graphic design when Monotype stole me away and let me make typefaces for a living – and I haven’t looked back.”
“I try to respond to an actual need or requirement rather than pull design ideas out of thin air,” explains Crossgrove about what drives his work. Drawn in the early 1990s, the Mundo Sans™ family was born out his frustration with the quirks and awkwardness of many humanist sans typefaces available at the time. The impetus for his [Burlingame™]( family was a branding typeface for a gaming company – which meant that the design had to perform well on small screens. While it was not incorporated into a video game, Burlingame was eventually licensed for use in human-machine interface displays for automobiles. Crossgrove’s [Cavolini™]( script was also designed for digital screens, but here his goal was to create a versatile casual hand-written style, making the design an ideal “personality” font for a variety of on-screen applications. He drew the [Biome™]( family to be “both futuristic and organic, with a sense of calm.”
In addition to creating new typefaces for the Monotype Library, Carl has also worked on several type projects for corporate branding. When asked, what part of his work he finds most rewarding Carl’s answer was “I feel most gratified by seeing the typeface used as intended; when the client or designer takes advantage of a typeface's strengths and produces a compelling design with it.”
