[Featured Designer: Hannes Von Döhren]
Featured DesIGNER: [Hannes von Döhren]
[Hannes von Döhren] studied graphic design in college, and his first job was doing just that in a large advertising agency. Type, however, became an interest early in his career. âI began to create fonts just for fun,â he says. âNone of them were good enough to sell, yet neither were they so bad that I trashed them â so I began distributing them for free. After a while, I figured that I should learn to make good typefaces so that I could sell them.â
Since he changed his focus from graphic to typeface design in 2008, and founded the HVD foundry in Berlin, Hannes has worked to establish and uphold a standard of providing high quality and distinctive typefaces.
Since then, [von Döhren] has released a wide and divers range of [Klintâ¢] typeface designs â like the family that blends a technical mien with humanistic affability, the semi-script [Pluto] and more traditional [Pluto Sans] families, the [Cowboyslangâ¢] design that grabs attention like a Veg-o-Matic salesman, the four-weight [Reklame Scriptâ¢] family based on brush lettering and the [Brandonâ¢] super family of four distinct â but related â designs. Von Döhren found his muse for the first of these faces, [Brandon Grotesque], in the geometric sans serif typefaces that were popular during the 1920s and 30s. âI love the old magazines that are set in these typefaces,â he says. âI wanted to create a typeface that echoed the fonts used in these publications, strict in its architectural forms and yet evoking the warmth of the yellowed pages.â
So what is the key to [von Döhrenâs] success? Perhaps it is the standpoint from which he approaches each type project. âI am a full time type designer,â he says, âbut because I have a graphic design background, I always look at typefaces from the graphic designerâs perspective.â

[Jos Buivenga] gave fonts away for 15 years before turning his one-man Dutch foundry into a commercial venture. “I started making fonts just out of curiosity and admiration for type, and was thrilled that so many people liked my stuff,” he recalls. “I never thought of making money with them. It was just a hobby.” In 2008, while still working as an art director at an advertising agency, he released his first commercial typeface, [Museo™]. To give the design a jump-start, Buivenga offered several weights for free, allowing designers to try the design in real-world projects. The strategy paid off. The Museo family became a bestseller.
Buivenga now calls himself a full-time type designer and his foundry, [exljbris], is a going concern. Several new typeface designs have been developed and the Museo family has grown so large, it can probably be seen from space. The original semi-slab serif suite of faces encompasses five roman weights, each with an italic counterpart. A sans serif complement, the [Museo Sans] design, also has five different roman weights with matching italics, as does a true [slab serif] version of the extended family. The [Museo Sans Rounded] side of the family is italic-less, but sports a very bold sixth weight that would give [Cooper Black™] a run for its money.
And the Museo family is not alone, [exljbris] also offers several other designs, including the extended [Calluna™] and [Calluna Sans] designs and upright script, [Fertigo™].
