This month’s featured fonts are about customization and personalization—special effects and unique pairings abound!
[Above the Sky]( from [My Creative Land]( corrals four brush scripts and a host of ornaments into a happy package of typographic confectionery. They can be mixed at will with each other – and probably any font on your hard drive. The foundry’s [Rockeby Brush]( creates the immediacy of hand lettering with three sets of capital letters, mid and end letter swashes, ligatures, hundreds of alternate characters, and a bundle of extra flourishes. [Civic Sans]( from [CozyFonts Foundry]( is a casual geometric design in five weights and an equal number of variations. From stenciled to stitched and balloon to outline, there are enough versions for just about any project. [Eldwin]( from [The Northern Block]( blends a suite of friendly scripts and sans serif capitals into an unusual – and charming – family. [Galin Kastelov’s]( [Nolan]( family has all the tools necessary to shine in print and on screen. Relaxed spacing, a large x-height, open apertures and slightly wide proportions make this sans a winner. [Versatile]( from [Borges Lettering]( is a bold sans with more special effects than you can shake a pica rule at.
Add to this the powerful sans serif designs of René Bieder and the easy-on-the-eyes classic interpretations from the insigne foundry, and you’ve got a commanding line-up of fonts. In addition, with every desktop font order, you’ll get this month’s free font: Auriol™ Bold, an Art Nouveau revival from the famed Matthew Carter.

#[Insigne](
Featured FOUNDRY: [Insigne](
With well over 150 typeface families available on Fonts.com and a growing collection of custom typefaces for branding (that includes Chatype for the city of Chattanooga), insigne (all lowercase) is a wide and diverse source of fonts. While far ranging in design, according to Jeremy Dooley (insigne’s founder), they share common goals: “to allow a message to be absorbed and then to persuade and convince.”
While ideal for print applications from posters and advertising to book covers and packaging, insigne’s fonts are equally at home on screen in web pages, games, video titles and blog posts. Predicting the arrival of variable fonts in a 2011 MyFonts “Creative Characters” [interview]( Dooley is a typographic visionary that designs typefaces for today – and tomorrow.
Insigne’s first big hit, [Aviano]( is a suite of almost 100 fonts spread across 12 variations of classic titling letterforms. It was an instant success with it was first released over 10 years ago, and remains powerhouse today. In fact, it’s being used to brand the upcoming movie Avengers: Infinity War.
[Belda]( is another insigne design based on classic Roman inscriptional letters. Its delicate shapes, flowing curves and sharp serifs are a subtle melding of harmony and individuality. Available in almost 50 fonts each of normal, condensed and extended proportions, the family is easy on the eyes in its lighter weights and commanding in the bolder designs. From branding to book covers, this is another insigne design that has few boundaries.
"The Clothes Letters Wear," a children’s book written by Dooley, provided the impetus for the [Cabrito family](. The original design has since been expanded into the three additional flavors of [Cabrito Inverto]( with a horizontal weight stress, [Cabrito Sans]( the semi-sans [Cabrito Semi]( and the elegantly stylized [Cabrito Didone –]( each with over 40 variations.
From classically elegant serif typefaces to futuristic sans serif designs and layered fonts to soft friendly scripts, insigne is worth checking out. [Check out]( all our designs from insigne now!

Featured designer: [René Bieder](
âHaving to meet or surpass a design clientâs expectations can be a great challenge,â says René Bieder. âIn a way, itâs the opposite of being an independent type designer, where you often get the freedom to do whatever you like. Itâs the combination of these two disciplines that interest me.â
Biederâs career roots are in advertising, graphic and web design. In fact, his first job was working for a Berlin-based digital design agency. âI was new to the industry,â he recalls, âand I had such a strong urge to learn and try out new things that I worked day and night.â Web design paid the bills for a couple of years until an opportunity to collaborate on a branding project for a Berlin start-up presented itself. Bieder and two friends pitched â and won â the project. When the gig was over, they had designed everything from the company logo to its new web site. In addition, a small advertising agency grew out of the partnership, where Bieder began to work. His contributions were art direction, interactive and print design, and the occasional logo or custom lettering â and this is where his journey in the typographic arts began.
âMy interest in designing typefaces increased enormously; but I had no idea how to approach the making of fonts,â he confesses. His first designs were created in Illustrator®, which gave him individual digital letters â but not a proper font. It took another friend to introduce Bieder to FontLab. âWhen I typed something in my own font for the very first time, I was so overwhelmed that it was instantly clear to me: I wanted more of this! Moreover, I wanted to design a whole family!â Ten months later, he published his first font family, [RBNo3.1](. âI had actually viewed the work as an exercise,â he recalls. âThis is why it has a numerical name, it was more of a workshop experiment. Yet I was curious to how it would be received.â
RBNo3.1 and his next typeface, the distinctive and very large slab serif [Quadon family]( quickly became best-selling designs. These were followed by [Gentona]( nine weights â each with an italic companion â of neo-grotesque, that is both exceptionally legible and has a bit of an attitude. Galano is a superfamily of sans serif power. [Galano Grotesque]( is a thoroughly modern geometric sans that boasts 10 roman weights, each with an italic, and a bevy of alternate characters. [Galano Grotesque Alt]( takes these alternate characters and expands them into their own âalternativeâ family of designs. Their long ascenders and descenders create a geometric sans with a singular rhythm and flow. [Galano Classic]( is the display branch of the family tree. It can stand on its own â or play a supporting role to its Galano siblings in headlines and other display applications. Biederâs [Campton]( is another geometric sans, but with more traditional underpinnings. Itâs quiet on the page, while open counters and simple shapes invite readers.
Biederâs [Sagona]( is a breakaway from his sans serif typefaces, Itâs a straightforward no nonsense slab serif design with a delightfully vivacious italic counterpoint. Text or display copy â in print or on screen â this is a family that knows few limits. [Quarion]( is Biederâs newest typeface family. In it, he looked to both the past and the future for inspiration. Itâs a reinterpretation geometric sans serif designs of the early part of the 20th century â with an added hint of organic humanism. Its subtle stroke modulation makes for easy reading at text sizes while giving the design personality in display settings.
