These unique creatures are on the BRINK OF EXTINCTION. First: New orca mother Tahlequah mourned her baby when it died just thirty minutes after being born. She carried its body over 1,000 miles in her grief before letting go. Then: Playful Cappuccino and Marina the matriarch likely died from starvation reported in the press in 2022 â deaths that their families are still grieving. Now: A new baby orca, J60, was born on Christmas, but he hasnât been seen with his family â and his lifeless body is likely lying on the ocean floor. Only 75 orcas are left in the Southern Resident pods. And these endangered whales are suffering from potential starvation and paralyzing grief. Now, things could go from bad to worse: A new shipping terminal and oil pipeline expansion threaten these sensitive orcas, their fragile habitats, and the people who live nearby. Just one major oil spill could completely wipe out these struggling orcas. Today is World Whale Day, and weâve set an ambitious $82,000 fundraising goal for the sake of vulnerable whales like orcas, the oceans they call home, and our planet. But we only have until MIDNIâGHT TONIâGHT to reach our goal â and we canât get there without support from members like you! If Big Oilâs plans move forward, it could be disastrous. Oil spills are practically guaranteed â putting coastal communities at risk, too. Those who rely on the bounty of the sea could see oil covered marine life washing up on the shores and livelihoods destroyed. Tourists who come to marvel at the majestic Pacific Northwest could instead gaze out at polluted waters and fish floating belly-up. Thatâs why Friends of the Earth is working to stop these deadly plans to expand oil tanker traffic and speed more massive ships through orca habitat before itâs too late.
