Now, to make matters worse, their last surviving family members are wasting away from hunger, grief and constant stress. Under these conditions, we could lose this majestic and gentle species for good! Big Oil and the shipping industry are largely to blame, and here’s why: These corporations are risking the health of our orcas and oceans for profit. A massive new shipping terminal and expanded oil pipeline are in the works right now – and they could bring an ENORMOUS increase in dirty shipping traffic through orcas' fragile habitat. The risk of deadly oil spills, high-speed collisions and worsening starvation could lead to the EXTINCTION of the LAST 73 Southern Resident orcas on Earth! Plans to expand a major oil pipeline would send MILLIONS more barrels of dirty tar sands oil in tanker ships through these orcas’ delicate habitat. That means it’s just a matter of time until the next oil spill could wipe out this endangered orca family for good. If that wasn’t scary enough, the shipping terminal alone could drive away orcas’ scarce food supply, spew huge quantities of fossil fuels into our warming planet and disrupt whales’ crucial sonar signals with underwater noise pollution. That means these weak, stressed and grieving orcas will struggle even more to feed themselves, locate each other and avoid being driven from their home by speeding ships.
