Marina -- “a beloved mother and grandmother.” Cappuccino -- “a gregarious, curious, and kindly orca.” Ripple -- “just 11 years old.” These are just some of the heartfelt words that were used to describe 3 cherished members of the Southern Resident orca pod following their tragic deaths. Now, there are ONLY 73 of these endangered whales remaining, and their fragile population is hanging on by a thread. Mourning the loss of their family members and growing weaker by the day, these precious animals are malnourished and starving because Chinook salmon is rapidly disappearing. This critical food source that orcas depend on for survival is being DECIMATED by corporate overfishing and bycatch -- and if we don’t ACT NOW to replenish the Chinook salmon stock, experts predict that these iconic whales could be EXTINCT within the next few decades! [YOUR SIGNATURE IS NEEDED: Friend, endangered orcas are clinging to survival, and they’re desperately counting on you to be their voice. Will you add your name now to tell the National Marine Fisheries Service to STOP corporate overfishing before it’s too late?]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Struggling to find enough food, Southern Resident orcas are not only starving to death but are also under extreme stress and enduring miscarriages -- making it virtually impossible for them to substantially replenish their dwindling population. A pregnant orca must eat 300 pounds of fish DAILY to keep herself and her unborn calf healthy -- but sadly, up to 69% of these mamas can lose their babies before birth. Look, Friend, orcas are already up against global warming, ocean acidification, and increased pollution -- all threats largely driven by humans. The least we can do now is take the necessary steps within our control to help mitigate these dangers before it’s too late to SAVE the final existence of these endangered whales. But let’s be blunt: Government environmental agencies like NMFS have FAILED to rein in the greedy commercial fishing industry. And as a result, the powerful corporations responsible for overfishing and bycatch continue to reap MASSIVE profits at the expense of vulnerable orcas who are suffering and clinging to life. [Friend, time is running out for these endangered orcas, and we can’t let them down.
