Next weekend, the highly anticipated release of the live-action rendering of The Little Mermaid is set to hit theaters. For many who fondly remember the 90’s animated classic version, the ads for the new film transport viewers to an enchanted, sparkling underwater setting that brings magical childhood dreams to life on the big screen. However, one thing you won’t see advertised on Disney’s billboards is the story of Lighthouse Point. Once nestled among the crystalline, turquoise waters of Eleuthera Island in The Bahamas, Lighthouse Point was abundant with brightly colored marine life living harmoniously across ancient limestone coral reefs. It doesn’t require too much imagination to see that Disney has drawn much of its inspiration from the natural wonders of our real-life oceans. But unlike fantasy and fiction, Lighthouse Point didn’t have a fairy tale ending. Instead, Disney itself became the villain by RECKLESSLY BUILDING OVER this aquatic habitat with the construction of a $250 MILLION cruise ship pier! Fortunately, the story of our ocean’s coral reefs doesn’t have to end here. If we can demonstrate enough public support from environmentalists like you, we can still STOP Big Cruise corporations from DESTROYING the last of our world’s great coral reefs. [Don’t miss your chance to be a HERO today, Friend. Add your name right now to help SAVE our coral reefs from being WIPED OUT by the cruise industry’s corporate greed! >>]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Coral reefs are called “the rainforests of the sea” due to their key role in our ocean ecosystems. When Disney Cruise decided that its profits were more important than the preservation of Lighthouse Point, it not only damaged a critical habitat that supported biodiversity and promoted a healthy planet, but it also destroyed a significant part of the local Bahamian culture. Increased vessel traffic and industrial development by cruise ship corporations are decimating our oceans with dirty, toxic pollutants that end up on our beaches and in our oceans and the atmosphere. We cannot allow Big Cruise to continue threatening our oceans, coral reefs, marine life, local communities, and the planet -- for the sake of profit. [But this powerful industry won’t stop without intervention from the Environmental Protection Agency. Please, Friend, will you demand immediate action from the EPA now before it’s too late?]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Thanks for protecting our oceans and coral reefs, Friends of the Earth Contact Us: Friends of the Earth U.S. Washington, D.C. | Berkeley, CA 1-877-843-8687 [Contact us](foe.org/about-us/contact/) Email Preferences: [Click here to unsubscribe]( Learn more: www.foe.org/news www.foe.org/about-us www.foeaction.org Connect: [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Flickr]( © 2021, Friends of the Earth.
