A pregnant Southern Resident orca swims through her native Pacific waters in search of food to nourish herself and her calf. She must consume 300 pounds of fish daily to remain pregnant, and if she doesn’t find salmon soon, she could lose her baby. But where have all the Chinook salmon gone? Increased commercial fishing has caused a dramatic loss of this essential food source for orcas, leading to starvation, stress, and miscarriages. And with only 75 Southern Resident Killer Whales remaining, it’s critical that we replenish their food source immediately if this iconic species is to have a shot at recovery. [Please, Friend, add you name now to tell the National Marine Fisheries Service to take action on the overfishing that is threatening the survival of endangered orcas >>]( [SIGN THE PETITION NOW]( The orca population is at its lowest point since the 1970’s, facing threats like climate change, ocean acidification, and increased shipping pollution. And without enough Chinook salmon, they don’t stand a chance. Once plentiful with salmon for Southern Resident orcas to feed on, the Northwest Pacific waters have lost 159 Chinook salmon populations, leaving whales vulnerable to starvation and malnutrition. Without more food, scientists predict orcas will be extinct within the next few decades. We must STOP the corporate fishing industry from depleting orcas’ most important food source before it’s too late for these beloved sea mammals. [Will you take action to help STOP overfishing from driving orcas closer to extinction?]( [SIGN THE PETITION NOW]( Thank you for protecting orcas.
