Bear hunting season has started, and trophy hunters received the green light to murder hibernating bears and their cubs -- going so far as allowing cubs to be shot even when unaccompanied by their mothers! [Help save bear cubs and protect our ecosystems: Donate $27 to Friends of the Earth today.]( North Carolina has even taken the additional step of changing “designated bear sanctuaries” to “designated bear management units” so they can allow bear hunting in areas where mother bears and their cubs were meant to be protected! At a time when weakened mama bears are recovering from hibernation and foraging for food for their babies, this is a cruel way to “hunt” for these vulnerable creatures, pushing the bear massacre to new heights. Protect mama bears and their babies. Donate $27 to Friends of the Earth today. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: [Donate $5/month immediately]( [Donate $27 immediately]( In the spring, bears emerge from hibernation malnourished and weak, using all their energy to search for food in order to nurse their bear cubs -- making them almost defenseless to trophy hunters. This cruel practice of hunting bears during their most vulnerable state not only murders the mothers, but leaves orphaned cubs to suffer from starvation, predation, and exposure. We can’t allow bears and their cubs to be slaughtered with impunity! There are states like Wyoming that are going further by working to delist grizzly bears from Endangered Species Act protections, which would put them in the crosshairs of trophy hunters. The fate of bears and their cubs is being decided by private interests who are prioritizing trophy hunting and mining, logging, and drilling for profit. Grizzlies are an irreplaceable resident of America’s wild places -- integral to national parks like Yellowstone and huge swaths of the country for thousands of years. These mighty mammals represent America’s rugged wilderness. Now, their populations outside of Alaska have plummeted to a mere 2% of their historic population: Fewer than 2,000 grizzlies remain in the lower 48 states -- and they are being ruthlessly hunted. What’s worse is that these hunts are being held on America’s public lands and wildlife preserves where these creatures are meant to be protected. If the fate of our public lands and our precious iconic species continue to rest in the hands of bad actors, we may soon lose this iconic species. Protect bear cubs and our planet from bad actors. Make your $27 donation today. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: [Donate $5/month immediately]( [Donate $27 immediately]( The longer bears go without protection, the more time trophy hunters and oil, logging, and mining companies have to chip away at animal and land protections -- putting bears and their cubs at significant risk. Wyoming has already tried to strip protections for grizzlies twice in the past -- so far unsuccessfully -- but the next attempt may mean a disastrous hunting season for bears. And it’s not just grizzlies on the line -- black bears continue to be hunted each year regardless of the risk to the bear population. Missouri nearly wiped-out black bears in their region by the early 1900s because of hunting and overlogging -- and they have now allowed a trophy hunt without even bothering to hold a population count. Your membership donation to Friends of the Earth will allow us to work towards curbing the concerted attack on bears, the lands they roam, and our planet. We are also compelling the US Fish and Wildlife Service to restore the ban on trophy hunting bear cubs, opposing oil and gas lease sales on public lands, and working to keep grizzlies protected under the ESA. Bear cubs need you now, and there is no time to lose. Trophy hunters are continuing their hunts as I write this, and we need to use every tool available to protect threatened bears and their cubs before it’s too late. Are you with us, Friend?
