When little Gingerbread washed ashore in Florida, the minuscule hawksbill turtle weighed only about

When little Gingerbread washed ashore in Florida, the minuscule hawksbill turtle weighed only about as much as a carrot! There were no signs of external injury or infection, but when the precious hatchling passed away, experts discovered a disturbing amount of plastic pieces — 24 to be exact! — inside the helpless creature’s tiny tummy. It takes just ONE single piece of plastic to KILL a baby sea turtle. Although hatchlings like Gingerbread are more vulnerable, turtles of all ages are known to consume plastics and microplastics — which often leads to serious injury and death. With scientists predicting that the ocean will be filled with more plastic than fish by the year 2050, it’s no surprise that more and more unknowing marine animals like baby sea turtles are mistaking all the rampant plastic waste for food. Little do these innocent creatures know, they might be taking their last bite. Meanwhile, as 1,000 sea turtles die every year from plastic ingestion, people on land are suffering severe impacts of the plastic industry as well. Industrial-scale plastic manufacturing is burning through colossal amounts of harmful fossil fuels, worsening the climate crisis. These massive plastic facilities are spewing toxic pollutants into the atmosphere, putting nearby neighborhoods — often low-wealth BIPOC communities — at serious risk of human health concerns. Friend, we can’t just sit back and allow greedy Big Plastic and their fossil fuel industry allies to destroy our oceans, threaten our communities, and harm the environment. We need to rally together NOW in defense of our precious Earth and DEMAND bold federal action to address the plastic crisis: [Can we count on you to take action with us against plastic pollution today? Please sign our plastics petition by the deadline at 11:59 P.M. TONIGHT! >>]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( The plastic pollution crisis impacts every single one of us — and not just by killing our valuable marine life, threatening local communities, or exacerbating the climate crisis. Plastics have actually infiltrated every aspect of our lives from the food we eat, to the water we drink, to the air we breathe. Of the 13,000 different chemicals used to make plastic, at least 25% of them are hazardous to humans — with experts linking a host of known diseases and dangers from exposure to these chemicals such as reproductive harms and risks to our cardiovascular health, kidneys, and nervous systems. Environmental experts are warning of an imminent PLASTIC APOCALYPSE with fears rising of a devastating plastic takeover if plastic pollution and production continue at this rate. But if we truly want Big Plastic corporations to scale back, then we NEED the federal government to intervene IMMEDIATELY. [Please, Friend time is running out to STOP THE PLASTIC APOCALYPSE from annihilating our oceans, human health, and our planet. Will you be an environmental champion today by signing our plastic pollution petition before it’s too late?]( [SIGN THE PETITION]( Thanks for fighting back against plastic pollution, Friends of the Earth Contact Us: Friends of the Earth U.S. Washington, D.C. | Berkeley, CA 1-877-843-8687 [Contact us](foe.org/about-us/contact/) Email Preferences: [Click here to unsubscribe]( Learn more: www.foe.org/news www.foe.org/about-us www.foeaction.org Connect: [Facebook]( [Twitter]( [Flickr]( © 2017, Friends of the Earth. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
