Do you ever wonder why you can sell items for so much more money on Ebay than you can on Facebook Marketplace? Or why some items don't sell well on Facebook Marketplace but will sell on other platforms like Ebay, Etsy or Mercari? The answer: you are selling to a larger market. Back in the day I used to go to yard sales with my mom on Saturdays. It was a big ordeal in our house. My parents would pull out the Orlando Sentinel newspaper on Friday evening and circle all the yard sales that would be happening Saturday morning. Now this was before GPS or even Mapquest, and my mom mapped out her entire route for the morning. And she knew exactly where she was going! And I loved to tag along. (This is really where Flea Market Flipper started!) I have 6 older sisters so my parents went to yard sales to provide for our big family. But they also went to find things to resell! Now, they couldn’t sell anything on eBay because it wasn’t invented yet, so where could they resell them? The classified section of the newspaper of course! Garage sales could only reach a certain number of foot traffic on a given Saturday, but the classified section could reach thousands of people in a single week! They made thousands of dollars over the years by listing items people were getting rid of at yard sales & selling them in the classifieds section! Larger audience --> more potential customers --> can sell for more money than at a yard sale. When you sell on an online marketplace like eBay, you have 132 million registered users that have the potential to see your item. When you list an item locally on Facebook Marketplace you are limited to a reach of around 40,000 - 60,000. But what is the one main difference about selling on these platforms? Offering shipping to your customers. When you offer shipping, you open up to a nationwide - and even worldwide audience! Now all of these people won't be looking for your specific item, but your customer base potential just grew a ton by offering shipping! After helping people grow their ebay business (for the last 9 years!) we've noticed that the fear of shipping is a big hurdle to many people.
