The records have been taken from our wider collection of Electoral Register PDFs which, like our collection of British and Irish newspapers, is currently searchable through a technology called “Optical character recognition” (OCR). OCR is the electronic conversion of images of typed, handwritten or printed text into searchable machine-encoded text and is the most effective way of digitising collections that contain vast amounts of information. To create this collection, we have reconverted the original documents to improve accuracy while developing a process to pick out individual names. The records can now be searched using name variants and results will include exact matches. [Coming soon] Next week’s update will include a variety of new additions from Scotland, Cornwall and Surrey. [do not forget] ...to search for your English & Welsh ancestors among our wider collection of UK Electoral Registers. Our largest single collection, England & Wales, Electoral Registers 1832-1932, was released in partnership with the British Library and contains the names of more than 220 million voters. Searching this vast resource is an excellent way of finding your ancestors between the censuses or uncovering the history of your home.
