We get it — it’s exhausting. But this isn’t the first time the U.S. has had gas problems (that Pepto-Bismol couldn’t fix, anyway.) 😄 Let’s rewind and see gasoline’s wild 50-year journey of highs and lows. 1973: The price of a barrel of oil skyrockets from $3 to $12, almost doubling gas prices overnight. Why? Persian Gulf oil producers put an embargo on U.S. oil exports. 1979: The Iranian Revolution disrupts global oil trade. Americans suffer from an oil shortage — having to wait in long lines to fuel up. Meanwhile, inflation reaches an astronomical 11.35%! 2001: Gas prices peak — reaching an average of $1.72 per gallon. July 2008: Financial speculation and rising demand from developing economies push gas prices to $4.16 per gallon. December 2008: The Great Recession rattles the global economy, and gas prices plummet to $1.67. 2011: Gas prices breach nearly $4 per gallon after Libya’s oil production comes to a halt. 2016: Global demand for crude oil plummets. Gas prices average $2.14 per gallon — the lowest average price since 2004. 2020: The demand for gasoline plummets after COVID-19 lockdowns. Prices reached a staggering low of $1.77 on April 27th. 2022: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupts the global supply chain, sending gas to an average $4.33 a gallon. As you can see, gas prices swing pretty wildly over the long haul. And hopefully, these outrageous gas prices are only temporary. So while we wait … and hope gas prices drop sometime soon, here are a few articles that could help you reduce the pain at the pump: - [The Best Gas Credit Cards of April 2022]( - [9 Everyday Products That’ll Cost You More Because of Rising Gas Prices]( - [What’s Your State Doing to Help You at the Gas Pump?]( MARKET MOVES While the broader stock market has been sputtering a bit recently, one sector has been rallying — energy stocks. And it could have more room to run, even with unusually high prices. Investing in the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) could help you tap into the whole sector. But energy stocks are also vulnerable to risks, like a potential economic slowdown reducing demand. OTHER WORTHWHILE READS - Expect a recession?
