Reform in the banking industry and a booming economy rendered it obsolete. But now, we might need it again. So the government is trying it out, on a very small scale. The trial program is in the pilot phase now in four U.S. cities: Falls Church, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; and New York City (the Bronx), New York. If the program is successful, it could be rolled out to other rural areas in the U.S., bringing banking services to people who need it, as well as much-needed profitability to the U.S. Postal Service â instead of posting [billions]( in losses every year.
