A handful of years ago I got angry at a mentor of mine. I had worked hard on presentation with a drawing in it and I thought it was amazing. I showed it to other people and they thought it was hilarious and amazing too. Then after I showed it to all of them, my mentor called me and said: "It’s not that good. You can do better." I remember the exact words I wanted to say in that moment: "f*ck you!" I rarely get mad in business, but this guy pissed me off. Who the fuck was he to tell me it wasn’t that good? Everyone else thought it was hilarious. Who did he think he was? Well, he was the guy who knew better than me. And that’s why I had trusted him as a mentor. But the worst part of the story is he basically told me my idea was rubbish and then hung up the phone because he had to get on another call. I remember sitting in the parking lot of my old office after he’d hung up, feeling like he’d just told me I had cancer and wished me on my merry way. Echoes of "f*ck him, what a knob" ran through the caverns of my mind. I was only about 25 years old at the time and I wasn’t as open to being wrong as I am now. But later that night he called me back and apologized for having to leave the call so abruptly. He explained what he meant when he said it wasn’t good enough. "It’s not that it’s bad. It’s good. It’s funny. And of course it’s going to be funny to other people. They aren’t comedians. They aren’t thinking long term. I just know you can do better. I was thinking you DON’T address what the drawing is." Me: "Ohhhh, I see. But that seems hard. I don’t know how to do that." Mentor: "Well, why don’t you try." Me: "Ok, I’ll give it a shot." The next morning I went to my favorite local coffee shop in Austin to find a creative solution to this annoying problem. I grabbed an espresso, put in my headphones to listen to the Gladiator soundtrack, took out my yellow legal pad, and started thinking. No distractions. No computer. No bollocks. Just focus. I drew the picture over and over again trying to figure out how the hell I could make this funny and useful without drawing attention to what the drawing was. Is it a rocketship? No, I can’t quite make that work. Is it a skycraper? No, it’s too circular. More drawings and ideas…more failures. Then it hit. It’s an arc. A story arc. It’s the foundation of a great email. Then the top is the tip. And the rest is history. If you’ve ever seen my now infamous "phallic drawing" then you know what I’m talking about. This is how that drawing and presentation came to be. Now I’ve taken that drawing all over the world and the US during my speeches. And no one has ever forgotten it. But that isn’t because I’m some sort of genius who came up with it in a dream. It’s because I had a mentor that made me say "f*ck you." The greatest mentors are the ones who challenge you. The ones who want the best for you, but know they may need to hurt your feelings to take you there. The ones who’ve been where you want to go. That silly drawing has led to millions of dollars for me over the last 6 years. All because of this guy who told me my first draft wasn’t good enough. That guy was Kevin Rogers btw. Amazing copywriter and comedian...and even better friend. So why am I telling you this story? Because the right coach or mentor can change the course of your life. Like Kevin did for my life. And because my mastermind called The Collective is the only place where I coach people anymore. Other than one-on-one consulting that's super expensive. The Collective launch ends tomorrow night...if you want me to coach you and help you then this is the best time to get in. I'm only allowing 50 people in for this launch and there's only 22 spots left as of right now. [ Click here to see what you get in The Collective]( Let me know if you have any questions...
