It’s impossible to be liked by everyone. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that if everyone

It’s impossible to be liked by everyone. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that if everyone likes you, you’re doing things wrong. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, you will be disliked. Especially if you achieve any level of greatness. Especially these days where you can tap your thumbs on a screen and say something mean in seconds. Even Mother Theresa was disliked by some people. They probably said stuff like "she thinks she’s SUCH a good person cuz she helps the poor. She’s probably only doing it to look like she’s a good person." Martin Luther King Jr. was so disliked he got killed. Abraham Lincoln just wanted to spend a nice afternoon at the theater and he got shot…without even getting to see the end of the play. Here’s the harsh reality: The price of being great is tolerating hate. You can’t have greatness without hate. (Except maybe Paul Rudd…he’s just so damn likeable. Except that his new movie just got the lowest marvel movie rating ever so even he’s liable to be hated.) These days it’s worse than ever because it’s so easy to hate. You just have to leave a comment on someone’s instagram. In the past if you didn’t like Leonardo DiCaprio you’d have to find him in public (unlikely), walk up to him, and say "you’re a piece of shit Leo" to HIS FACE. And if you were over the age of 25 he would probably just ignore you anyways. It used to take courage to hate someone. There were consequences. Even if you were a journalist you had to put your name on your writing. Now it takes courage to be disliked. It takes courage to be someone who will be inevitably disliked. I recently had one my stand up clips go viral on the inter webs. It’s got millions of views across the different platforms. It’s getting shared all over the place. (Without some of these bastards tagging me I might add.) There are tens of thousands of comments. I obviously can’t read that many comments but I’ve read some. Most of them are along the lines of "this is so true. This is hilarious. This dude is on point." This is probably 98% of the comments. And then there are the funniest ones which just say "not funny." That’s only about 2% of the comments - maybe less - but you gotta be able to stomach it if you want greatness. The point is - the bigger you get - the more hate you have to tolerate. If you aren’t willing to pay that price - you won’t make it. I'm not saying you want to be a famous comedian or well-known or anything like that. I just think it's worth talking about either way because I have a book recommendation... There’s an incredible book called "The Courage to Be Disliked" that I recommend you check out if you have trouble being disliked. It was a powerful read for me personally. I wanted to talk about about email and how this affects it…but this email got long AF so I’m gonna save it for tomorrow. I’ll talk about being polarizing and why it’s important to do it…or NOT do it based on your personality. I’ll finish with this thought before I sign off for the day… People are making their decisions about you based on 20 second clips on Instagram. A 200 word email. An article someone else wrote about you. A 6 minute YouTube video. You are NOT those clips. You are YOU. Let people judge you based on their limited information. It’s not a reflection of you. It’s a reflection of their own reality. Most anger and hate comes from the person’s feelings towards themselves - especially if they feel the need to tell it to you on the internet. Talk soon, Ian "some people hate me" Stanley P.S. First impressions DO matter when it comes to email marketing. If you mess up your welcome email…people may never read one of your emails again. So don’t mess it up. I created some welcome email templates for those of you who want to ensure your welcome email wins over your subscribers. It’s only $7.
