I didn’t open my computer for about 8 days and it was amazing. I took some legit time off of work for the first time in quite awhile. Even when I travel a lot I tend to work at least 20 minutes to an hour a day. This time I decided I needed the break. I didn’t write daily emails. I didn’t do much useful stuff in general. I just took some time to reboot the brain. (I think this is the longest I’ve gone without sending an email in YEARS.) Now I feel about as excited as I’ve felt in a long time to work. The one thing I did do over the last couple of weeks is think deeply about how I want my life to look. More specifically, how I want my daily life to look. How many hours a day am I working? What time of day? What am I working on? I got really clear on what I want…and even more importantly what I DON’T want. That led to me creating a simple schedule that I think will allow for the most productivity and joy. And should limit me to about 4 hours of work a day. (I’ll probably make a YouTube video detailing the new schedule.) It took a lot of thought and reading to decided on what I believe will be optimal for me. I recommend you do the same thing. The reality is my schedule is designed for ME. I think the biggest mistake people make when it comes to productivity is thinking that you can follow someone else’s schedule and it’ll work for you. You need to adapt it to your unique way of working. (I’ll expand on this in the YouTube video.) Anyways, why am I telling you all this? Because it’s a new year and people are more likely to make big changes in their life at the start of a new year. I’m not personally one for New Years Resolutions. I’m more of a fan of New Years Intentions. I like to pick ONE word for the year and focus on that word. For this year it’s a word that’s haunted me for most of my life. Consistency. Consistency has been my weakness in basically everything I’ve done. In tennis, I hit the ball better than most everyone, but I missed too often. I didn’t make mistakes because I wasn’t capable of making less mistakes. I made mistakes because I was impatient and uncommitted to being consistent. I lost to significantly less physically talented players because they were willing to be consistent. Consistency isn’t something you have or don’t have. It’s a choice. A choice I’ve never really made…except in one area of my life. Writing. I’ve had periods of time in my life where I’ve written every single day no matter what. I’ve had times where I’ve hand copied sales letters every single day. (Thanks to CopyHour…which is reopening this week.) I’ve written daily because I adopted the mindset that practice mattered more than talent. That showing up everyday mattered more than how well you played when you showed up. I have a tendency to go hard at something for a little while and then stop. Then start again. Then stop. I’ll record 10 videos in a day and post one daily…then I’ll stop for a month. Then I’ll record one a day for a week and post them daily…then stop. You get the point. The reality is you gotta be consistent if you want BIG results. I’m tired of my own lack of consistency. That’s why I’m making it my theme for the year. I’m committed to showing up and doing the work I need to do (in each area of my life). So what’s your word for the year? What do you need to work on? What word can you say to yourself as a constant reminder and know that it’ll move you towards the life you want? Hope that helps ya. Talk soon, Ian "bout to be consistent AF" Stanley P.S. I’ve also been consistent with working out…but I don’t really count that because I love it and it’s easy for me to do. Although I am more consistent when I have something I’m training for. Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
