My buddy Derek wrote a really nice email about me to his list yesterday and I wanted to share it with you for a few reasons. 1. I love the way Derek writes. 2. It's flattering of me and that's cool. 3. It displays the power of storytelling in emails. Here's what he sent to his list... "Hey, It's one thing to see a great performer during the height of their career. It's a whole different experience to see a friend coming into their unique greatness right before your eyes. Last night I witnessed it... I went to see my good buddy Ian Stanley do standup at the Comedy Store in La Jolla and he crushed it. Now, Ian is a lot of things. - He's one of best & most creative email marketers in the world. - He's a successful business owner. - He's hilarious to talk to in person. And he makes hilarious guru parody videos. But I didn't fully grasp it until last night... Ian is truly in his "zone of genius" when he's doing standup comedy. He looks to be at his happiest up there performing and "murdering" as they say. It was remarkable and incredibly energizing to watch a friend finding what they're great at and locking into that zone. I woke up this morning with an extra pep in my step (despite some drinks last night). I've seen this same thing happen with several other friends in the past as well. One buddy switched from real estate to metal work/design and he's never been more at ease. One friend started a foundation and he's super dialed in and feeling fulfilled. Another has found his footing as a restaurant owner. When you "find your pocket" there's a whole new energy that invigorates your day. For me, writing these emails to my list is when I feel locked in. But even when we find something we deeply enjoy, we tend to complicate it and stop ourselves for any number of reasons. Steven Pressfield would call this "resistance". Seth Godin might call it the bottom of "the dip". For writers, often the biggest thing stopping us is simply putting our ass in the chair and writing something... So there's my transition to the Email-a-Day Challenge.
