My favorite scene from the movie Rush isn't actually a driving scene. If you're not familiar with the movie, it's about two Formula 1 drivers in the 70's. These drivers are rivals and polar opposite human beings. One of them, Chris Hemsworth's character named James Hunt is a good looking playboy partier full of raw talent. The other racer is Niki Lauda. A not-so-good-looking guy who's all about hard work and statistics. In 1976 they had an intense battle to become world champion. SPOILER ALERT... James Hunt ended up claiming the world championship by one single point in the final race of the season. After being crowned champion, the two rivals run into each other at a private airstrip. (Because that's apparently where rich race car drivers hang out.) They're in the same place...but in much different ways. James rolls up in a limo full of models and bottles of champagne. Niki is there getting ready to fly his own plane to develop his discipline. Niki says to James that they've been blessed to be given an enemy in life because having an enemy makes you better. After that Niki says "I need you to bust my balls to fuel me. So get back to work." James says "I will. I will. But I intend to enjoy myself first. Some of life needs to be for pleasure. What’s the point of having a million cups, medals, and planes if you don’t have any fun? How is that winning?" So why is this my favorite scene? Because I know how important it is to celebrate your wins. I believe deeply in what James Hunt said. It's important to ANCHOR your wins with celebration and some time off. I can already hear the haters saying "but James Hunt never won another world championship." That's not the point. The point is that success without happiness is not success. It's just a well polished turd. It looks nice from the outside. But the successful guy knows deep down that underneath the facade is just a bunch of shit. So what's the lesson for you? Celebrate your wins. Anchor your success. ENJOY your success. There's always MORE you can achieve. More is not always the answer. Contentment is the answer. I've had a phrase I've said to myself for nearly a decade: Be content with who you are, but not where you are. (But that's a longer topic to unpack on another day.) Let's stay focused on this topic... Don't suppress your good feelings. Don't gloss over your wins. You deserve to be happy. I recommend you look at your relationship to money and happiness.
