SEOs love a good conference, but how can you make sure you're getting the most out of them? Check out our tips to make conferences work for you. Are SEO conferences really worth it? SEO conferences are an amazing way to expand your network, keep up-to-date with the latest trends and tactics, and generally socialize... ...But they can also be expensive and a real time-sink. With our upcoming trip to [brightonSEO]( we thought we'd share some top tips for getting the most out of SEO and marketing conferences to get the best bang for your buck. It's all about the networking Ultimately, as much as conferences provide great educational opportunities, the real thing they offer is the chance to network with fellow SEOs and marketers. Online courses can fill the gap in knowledge but there's nothing quite like meeting fellow SEOs face-to-face to help you learn and potentially even earn. Even for those who are most active online conferences will bring a great opportunity to get yourself in front of potential clients, collaborators and yes, even competitors. 1.) Go Local Smaller-scale local conferences are a great way to dip your toes into the world of conferencing without having to take a full-on dive. Local conferences might not be tailored to your exact target market but they'll have plenty of founders and agencies of a similar scale to you who'll make for great networking opportunities. If you attend a few of these you'll even find you have some friendly faces around once you tackle the bigger conferences. 2.) Go Niche Daunted by the biggest conferences due to the number of attendees, or even just the prices? Go niche. Niche-specific conferences are a great way to interact in a smaller space that is more likely to be filled with exactly your target audience making it a great choice for your budget. Don't eschew these smaller conferences in favor of bigger names just for the sake of name recognition! 3.) Switch Things Up If you're anything like me the idea of networking with strangers is a daunting one. Thankfully, conferences these days offer a range of ways to meet your fellow marketers away from the pressure of the conference hall floor. Most conferences offer pre or post-conference hangouts that have a more relaxed atmosphere. Events like brightonSEO even offer several different networking events based on other activities. Take your mind off the pressure of networking by distracting yourself with another activity and you'll be surprised how naturally it can come to you! Beware of the upsell Many conferences will offer premium attendee packages at much higher costs than the baseline tickets. While these can be eye-catching there's often not that much to really differentiate them - do you really need free cheap coffee - and as we've said the bulk of the opportunity comes from networking anyway. Go steady on the sponsorships Moved on to exhibiting at conferences? Spend wisely. Whether you're considering a premium booth or a platinum-plus sponsorship package ask yourself if you're in a position to get the most out of this and, importantly, if you'll be able to measure the impact. We've gotten a lot out of the events we attend and sponsor, but that's after we've spent years laying the foundations of our brand rep. Whether it's attending or sponsoring, unless you're confidently in a position where you can afford to chalk budget up to brand exposure, you'll be much better off spending your money on another round at the pub next door with a few potential collaborators and clients. I know it sounds boring (and obvious), but even the best of us can fall foul of this in our early days... 👀 Ready to get out there?
