I accidentally deleted all my progre= ss halfway through writing the NotNewsletter. Thankfully, I'd been doing= some of my work in an external tool I made, so most of my links were saved= ! Most of them. Sadly, none of the Top Interactions made it. Oh well, ma= ybe next week. All I know is, I should always make a backup after c= ompleting a section. In other news: We're gonna see the [Aurora Borealis](3D") pretty soon, and you won't have to be at the poles t= o see it. XOXO, NotNewsletterMonkey ________________________ A message from Drew = trong>Curtis: ________________________ Hey everyone hope your week's been well.= I've been spending the week collecti= ng the things I need for [RAGBRAI](3D"htt=) 50. It's an annual b= ike ride across Iowa, taking 7 days and usually it's about 500 miles or so.= This year it starts in Sioux City and ends in Davenport. You p= ark at the finish line and catch a bus to the other side of the state, then= start riding back the following day. I don't do it every year but I = am this year because it's the 50th anniversary. There's a record crow= d coming, apparently. Musical guests in the evenings include Pork Tor= nados, Hairball, and Lynyrd Skynyrd somehow - I've heard of that last one.&= nbsp; Looking forward to being at a concert where I can legitimately shout = "play Free Bird." Fun fact - none of the original members are still i= n the band. Or alive. If any o= f you happen to be riding part or all of RAGBRAI, or happen to live somewhe= re along the way, let me know in the comments and I'll try to meet up. = ; It's immensely difficult with 25,000 - 50,000 riders on the road however.= One year I traveled up to RAGBRAI from KY with a guy who I never saw= even once on the road the following week. Western Iowa doesn't have = enough cell towers to support that many people showing up out of the blue. Here's hoping for good weather= because we're camping all week and nothing is guaranteed. I've got w= aterproof everything though, so as long as there's no killer heat wave that= week I should be fine. Good thing there are no surprise heat waves a= nywhere in the US this year. I= 'll be posting pics of the weirdest things I see on the ride over on my Ins= tagram - there will be dozens if not hundreds if prior years are any indica= tion. 4pm Thursday it's the [Fark News Livestream](3D")! Lots of astronomical = phenomena to talk about this week, as well as an update on the discovery of= yet another Portal to Hell and a roundup of the best fireworks accidents f= rom last week. ________________________ End = ;Drew transmission ________________________ Top Comments Some of t= he top-voted smartest and funniest comments from the past week. On the Quiz its= elf, ubermensch came out on top with 1036, followed by&nbs= p;bibliophile42 in second with 1009 and HighwayBil= l in third with 1004. skippy.fluff made fourth wi= th 1001, and Autoerotic Defenestration made it into the to= p five with 982. The hardest question on last week's Hard Quiz was = about the American Silver Eagle Coin, one of the weirdest pieces of money i= n existence. The idea behind the coin was to reduce the amount of silv= er in the Defense National Stockpile, which is a huge reserve of precious m= etals that the United States holds onto in case they are ever needed for wa= r production - but without flooding the market and reducing its price. Stri= king it as a coin made it appealing to collectors rather than industrial us= ers. Only 29% of quiztakers knew that although the coin is sold for $2 abov= e the spot price of silver (today that would be $24.39 + $2), the coin= 's face value is only $1 in order to deter it from being circulated - altho= ugh it is by law legal tender. The easiest question on last week's = Hard Quiz was about which operation really went way beyond "too soon" with = their signage promotion. 92% of quiztakers caught the article about a Subwa= y restaurant in Rincon, GA who decided "Our subs don't implode" was a great= way to attract business. I'm gonna guess someone was deep-sixed over that = one. Cast adrift, even. Thrown overboard. The hardest questio= n on last week's Easy Quiz was about collectable card game Magic: The Gathe= ring's latest promotion. Only 53% of quiztakers knew that the game was curr= ently issuing cards in a cross-promotion with The Lord of The Rings, and th= e absolutely unique (as in, only one with ever be made) "The One Ring" card= has been found. Although the owner wishes to remain anonymous, the grading= company where it was assayed posted an image of the card online. Some peop= le have already offered up to $2 million for the card, so we'll wait to see= if it surfaces in a tournament somewhere. The easiest questi= on on last week's Easy Quiz was about which historic structure a British to= urist thought would be a great place to memorialize his visit by carving hi= s and his girlfriend's initials into the rock. 94% of quiztakers knew that = the Colosseum was in Rome, while the other option, the Parthenon, is in Ath= ens, Greece. And they probably don't want you carving your initials into th= at, either. If you missed out last week, it's a great time to= [catch up on the Fark= Weird News Quiz](3D") now that you know a few of the answers. Congratulation= s once again to the winners, and we'll be doing it all again on Friday. = p> --------------------------------------------------------------- ([Fark.com](3D"") sent this newsletter emai= l to: {EMAIL}) To stop these emails, go to the Notifications tab of your [MyFark profile](3D"https:=) to change your subscription preferences.
