The FanGraphs Newsletter, August 20, 2021 By Jeffrey Bellone - August 20, 2021 RALLY TIME: The Los A

The FanGraphs Newsletter, August 20, 2021 [READ IN BROWSER]( By Jeffrey Bellone - August 20, 2021 RALLY TIME: The Los Angeles Angels overcame a 10-2 deficit to defeat the Detroit Tigers 13-10 at Comerica Park on Thursday. It matched the Angels' largest comeback in franchise history, which funnily enough was also set against the Tigers in 1986. []( LOSING STREAK: The Baltimore Orioles extended their losing streak to 15 consecutive games after falling to the Tampa Bay Rays, 7-2, on Thursday. Unfathomably, the Orioles have also lost each game by at least two runs, which is tied for the third most consecutive losses by multiple runs in major-league history. The defeat also clinched Baltimore's fifth consecutive losing season (38-82). []( WINNING STREAK: On the other side of the spectrum from the Orioles, the New York Yankees won their seventh straight game yesterday, defeating the Minnesota Twins, 7-5. After losing the Field of Dreams Game on a walk-off home run, the Yankees have nearly doubled their playoff odds from 42.1% to 81.3%. And down on the farm, pitching prospect Sean Boyle tossed a no-hitter for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. []( TRADING CARDS: A Fanatics-founded company that has yet to be named has reportedly reached a deal with Major League Baseball and the Players Association to become the exclusive licensee of baseball cards after Panini's and Topps' licenses with the MLBPA expire at the end of 2022. []( 📈 STAT OF THE DAY: By erasing a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-4, the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a 37-game losing streak when trailing by at least three runs. []( 🗣 QUOTABLE: “It was just me personally letting them know how proud I am of this group,” Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais said of calling a team meeting after the team's 9-8 win yesterday. “It's a special group. It really is. That's a long day. So pardon me for getting a little emotional, but I really love this team. I really do.” []( This newsletter is made possible due to the generous support of our members. [BECOME A FANGRAPHS MEMBER]( NON-HANDEDNESS PLATOON EFFECTS: Bryce Harper has destroyed inside pitches this year. He’s seen 441 of them and produced 22 runs above average. That counts good takes as well as solid contact, but his batting line is spectacular, too — .367/.480/.735, good for a .497 wOBA. Give him something he can pull, and it’s all over but the crying. 👉 [The Shreds of Some Platoon Insights, by Ben Clemens]( MLB MASCOTS: What Mr. Met represented was a modern-era shift for baseball. Fans had traditionally been a more raucous crowd that consisted primarily of adults, and teams at the time were making an effort to appeal more to families. 👉 [A Journey Through the History of MLB Mascots]( by Ashley MacLennan 📚 RECENTLY PUBLISHED [Chris Bassitt Escaped a Potential Nightmare Scenario]( by Jay Jaffe [Which Pitch Should Be Thrown Next?]( by Adam Daily [Roto Riteup: August 20, 2021]( by Justin Mason 🎧 [FanGraphs Audio: Len Kasper and Lenny DiNardo Talk Music]( 🎧 [Effectively Wild Episode 1735: In Play, Run(s)]( 🎧 [Chin Music, Episode 27: They're My Lunatic Children]( 👩‍💻 [Job Posting: Major League Baseball Associate Data Quality Analyst]( 👩‍💻 [Job Posting: Detroit Tigers Baseball Operations Software Engineer]( ⚾️ ROSTER REPORT For the latest roster information, please visit our [RosterResource]( pages.
