There was a time when Thanksgiving break was used to hang out with your family and watch football, but times are changing. Thanksgiving break can also be a time to park your butt on the couch with some sort of turkey Lunchable and watch television. The industry knows this, and what had previously been a week for this newsletter to recommend some old shows to catch up on during a TV downtime is now a week with some good new stuff. Hereâs what to watch this week; enjoy your break! -Tim Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide! SEASON 5 PREMIERES TUESDAY AT 10/9C ON FX, WEDNESDAY ON HULU [Fargo is back to its bleak best with a character to root for]( FX's logline for the fifth season of Noah Hawleyâs dark comedy anthology simply says a housewife (Juno Temple) lands in hot water with authorities after thinking she left her complicated past behind her â but all seasons of Fargo start off that innocuously. (Season 2 was about a hit-and-run and ended with aliens!) So let's not pay attention to the plot and focus on what we know we can expect from a new season: another excellent cast â Temple, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joe Keery, Lamorne Morris, Dave Foley, and Lukas Gage â and extraordinary character names â Gator Tillman, Dot Lyon, Ole Munch, and Danish Graves. On top of that, it appears that after two down seasons, Fargo has recaptured the magic that made it one of TVâs best in its first two seasons, as Kyle Fowle [says in his review](. Season 5 will air weekly on FX, with new episodes available on Hulu the next day.
TUESDAY ON NETFLIX [Mike Birbiglia dives into aging in The Old Man and the Pool]( [Man, I love Mike Birbiglia. As one of comedyâs premier storytellers, heâs made a career with one-man shows on Broadway discussing the finer points of (not) having children, (not) exercising for health, and more (ambivalence to) traditional personal development. His latest, Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man and the Pool, looks at aging â heâs in his mid-40s â and the scary warning signs of mortality, but in true Birbiglia form, he makes it personal and heartfelt by recognizing the triumphs in the little things. Birbigliaâs gift of gab and ability to capture an audience means heâs going to make an amazing grandpa one day. For more, I highly recommend his 2019 special, Mike Birbiglia: The New One, also on Netflix, especially if youâre a parent.]( WEDNESDAY ON NETFLIX [Netflix goes high and low with High on the Hog and Squid Game: The Challenge]( Wednesday is a good day to see what Netflix could be, and what it prefers to be. High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America returns for Season 2, showing how a food and travel show can be an eye-opening, informative, intellectual experience, and one of Netflixâs best shows. Squid Game: The Challenge balances things out as a numbing, soul-sucking, exploitative cash grab ([read Gavia Baker-Whitelawâs review here]( that pits 456 people against each other for $4.56 million. (To be fair, the production values are stellar and it can be addicting in the same way fail videos are.) Guess which one is going to be the big hit. Watch High on the Hog, OK? GET MERRY [The best new Christmas movies]( Fill up an old Big Gulp cup with eggnog and put on your âIâm not moving for eight hoursâ pants, because itâs time to be festive with some holiday movies. Our resident Christmas movie expert, Philiana Ng, has put together a [list of all the new Christmas movies]( worth keeping an eye on, whether theyâre on Netflix, Hallmark, or elsewhere.
