Twenty years ago today, Friends aired its final episode, calling it quits after 10 wildly successful seasons about a group of friends being friendly and enjoying their friendship. [In his review of the first season]( The Washington Post’s legendary TV critic Tom Shales said, “Friends comes across like a 30-minute commercial for Dockers or Ikea or light beer, except it's smuttier.” He gave it a zero out of 100, according to Metacritic. Here’s what to watch on TV this week. (Friends is streaming on Max.) -Tim   Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!   SERIES PREMIERES WEDNESDAY ON APPLE TV+ [Dark Matter takes an emotional, heady trip through the multiverse]( [It makes sense that Apple TV+, the techiest of all the streaming services, would be rich with science fiction shows. The latest is Dark Matter, an adaptation of the 2016 novel by Blake Crouch about a physics professor (Joel Edgerton) who gets kidnapped and thrown into a parallel universe where his life took a different path. But rather than focus on the theoretical physics of it all, Dark Matter is really a story of a man trying to return to his wife (Jennifer Connelly), underlined by themes of the choices we make, the regrets we can’t fix, and the confusion of infinite possibilities. It’s never on the level of Apple’s better sci-fi shows (Severance, Foundation), and it takes some time to get going, but it’s an easy watch that fully embraces the madness of its premise in its final episodes.]( NEW SEASON PREMIERES FRIDAY AT 7 PM ET ON DISNEY+ [Doctor Who makes history… again!]( [Everything old is new again on Doctor Who, and not just because it's a show about traveling through time. The British sci-fi series, a full-blown TV institution, is somehow branding its new season (or series, to the Brits) "Season 1" thanks to its new home in the U.S. on Disney+. Technically, this is the 14th season of the revival, and the show just celebrated its 60th anniversary overall. But you really don't have to understand all that history to jump into these new episodes — the glory of Doctor Who is in its willingness to reinvent itself whenever a new star steps into the title role. This season, Barbie and Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa takes the reins, commanding the TARDIS with charm to spare. Gatwa is absolutely terrific as the alien Time Lord, and his casting as the show's first Black Doctor marks a historic moment for the show. He's joined by Millie Gibson as the Doctor's new friend Ruby Sunday, while Russell T. Davies — who revived the series back in 2005 — returns as showrunner, just to blur the past into the present even more. -Kelly Connolly]( SEASON 2 PREMIERES SUNDAY AT 9/8C ON AMC AND AMC+ [Interview with the Vampire returns thirstier than ever]( If you dismissed AMC’s adaptation of Anne Rice’s vampire novels as another unnecessary reboot of a cherished property, now is your chance to make amends. Season 2 is even [more well-reviewed]( than the impressive first, bringing vampires Louis (Jacob Anderson) and Claudia (Delainey Hayles) to Paris so the show can truly camp it up with a theater troupe where the act of draining victims is met with thunderous applause. TV Guide’s Allison Picurro [wrote a beautiful cover story previewing the second season]( interviewing the cast and producers about what will no doubt be one of 2024’s best seasons of television. EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE [Everything to watch in May]( May is a monster month for television, but fear not! Our ultimate guide to what to watch on TV this month will help sort out the bad from the good, or at least the watchable from the unwatchable. (More TV doesn’t mean better TV.)
