The CDC reported in 2020 that Black women are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women. Wade protections gone and a critically low number of abortion providers in our country, this statistic could become even more disproportionate in the future. Black women deserve to be valued, protected, and supported no matter what decisions they make regarding their pregnancy. That’s why I have worked tirelessly to shed light on this problem and use my position in Congress to bring about positive change. I helped launch the Black Maternal Health Caucus in Congress and we just secured a significant investment that will support our mothers. I also introduced the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act which would make critical investments to improve maternal health across the nation and specifically address discriminatory dimensions of this crisis.
