[Clack: September 11 attacks reverberate 20 years later]( This week, we kick off things with several reflections on 9/11. Twenty years ago, the Express-News sent columnist Cary Clack to New York City to cover the attacks. For this anniversary, we sent Cary back to New York City to reflect on how the world has changed since the attacks, and how we have changed, too. As he writes:Â "9/11 made us love and cherish our country, and each other, a little bit more. As we remember the lives lost on that day and the families destroyed, letâs think about all we may yet lose if weâre not vigilant." [Read the full column here](. [Read More »]( From our readers And, finally, a shoutout to reader B. Sue Caldwell, who last week [offered this poignant letter]( about the service members we lost in the final days of our withdrawal from Afghanistan:Â I cried while watching the dignified transfer of 13 service members at Dover AFB on Aug. 29. As a combat veteran, the loss of these young promising Marines, Navy and Army comrades is immeasurable, profound and devastating. I was a 20-year-old WAC â Womenâs Army Corps â returning from my tour in Vietnam when I got off a Pan Am jet in Oakland at 3 a.m. on March 11, 1970, to see eight transfer cases sitting on the tarmac. Alone. There was no American flag draped on any of these cases, just darkness. They were brought back in the cargo hold; their only escorts were the overstuffed duffel bags of the other servicemen and myself. What I witnessed was immoral, indecent and dishonorable, a grim, stark reminder of my ungrateful nation. We honored the fallen last Sunday, but what have we ultimately learned? Who are we as Americans, and how do we become a grateful nation to all veterans?
