Cannon in Raimondo inaugural's 19-gun salute was made by Paul Revere
In 1776, Gen. George Washington deployed one cannon for the defense of Rhode Island, but after the war he took those cannons back. That left Rhode Island undefended, so the state ordered six cannons from Paul Revere s foundry. They were cast in bronze in 1798. Four were delivered, and are now on display in Newport. What happened to the other two? The state didn t pay for them.

Editorial: Shakeup in the state police
During the holiday season, when many Rhode Islanders were preoccupied with other matters, Gov. Gina Raimondo engineered a quick switch in the leadership of the state police. Without stating a reason, Col. Ann Assumpico, 62, abruptly announced her retirement as superintendent on Christmas Eve. Three days later, Raimondo confirmed rumors that she would appoint a 25-year veteran of the state police, Narragansett Town Manager James Manni, 57, as the new leader.
