We must hold those who profit from selling these deadly weapons to a higher standard—because when they fail to do their jobs, we lose our lives. [–]( Hi– Twenty-five years ago today at Columbine High School, two teenage gunmen killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded more than 20 others—leaving a community devastated and a nation in mourning. All these years later, many of the families, classmates, and teachers who survived the mass shooting at Columbine High School are still at the forefront of the movement to end gun violence—and their decades-long resilience has inspired countless others to turn their pain into action. But, devastatingly, in the 25 years since, gunfire on school grounds has become even more ubiquitous: There were more school shooting incidents between the 2017 and 2022 school years than in the previous 15 years combined. And this worsening crisis is perpetuated by an industry that has had little oversight from the federal government for the past 60 years, creating an atmosphere of impunity for reckless gun distributors and dealers. We can and should hold those who profit from selling these deadly weapons to a higher standard—because when they fail to do their jobs, we lose our lives. [Tell your U.S. representative to hold gun dealers accountable by co-sponsoring the Federal Firearm Licensee Act (FFLA).]( [HOLD GUN DEALERS ACCOUNTABLE]( The Federal Firearm Licensee Act would strengthen the laws that gun dealers must follow—like background checks, recordkeeping, and inspection requirements—and ensure that dealers who violate these life-saving laws are held accountable. The teenage shooters at Columbine High School shouldn't have had access to their weapons in the first place—they relied on friends and coworkers to purchase them. The FFLA would help crack down on straw purchasing like this, combat gun trafficking, and hold accountable those who let guns fall into the wrong hands. Twenty-five years later, we must honor the victims and survivors with action. We can't afford to not learn from previous tragedies. We can't afford to stop fighting.
