Survivors shouldn’t have to spend years searching for their loved ones’ killers. Congress

Survivors shouldn’t have to spend years searching for their loved ones’ killers. Congress must take action to regulate gun sellers. [–]( Hi– The laws that regulate gun sales are outdated, which makes them easy for rogue dealers and unlicensed sellers to exploit—endangering our communities. Because these laws haven’t been strengthened since the 1960s, guns can easily fall into the hands of people who shouldn’t have them in the first place—like the people who shot and killed my daughter, Darien, 14 years ago. On January 8, 2010, armed intruders burst into Darien’s home in Portland, Maine, shooting several times into her bedroom. She died weeks later from complications from her gunshot wounds—her life cut short at 25. The handgun used to shoot Darien was recovered in February 2010 at the scene of another (unrelated) murder. Further investigation led to a Maine man who originally bought the gun at retail, but soon sold it privately at a gun show to someone he didn’t know—no background check, no records kept—something not required by federal law. Now, fourteen years later, Darien’s murder is still unsolved. Survivors shouldn’t have to spend years searching for the people who killed their loved ones. Instead, those who profit from selling these deadly weapons—whether that’s at a gun show, an online marketplace, or at a dealer—should be held to a higher standard. That includes conducting background checks on purchasers and implementing other measures to prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands, and holding dealers accountable when they don’t follow them. [That’s why our movement is calling on Congress to modernize the way the gun industry does business by passing the Federal Firearms Licensee Act (FFLA).]( The bill is a comprehensive approach to strengthen the laws that gun dealers must follow—like background checks, recordkeeping, and inspection requirements—and ensures that dealers who violate these life-saving laws are held accountable. Your U.S. representative, Rep. Nadler, has yet to sign onto this critical gun safety bill. [Our lawmakers need to know we’re counting on them to act: Join me by sending a message to Rep. Nadler now.]( [SEND A MESSAGE]( I won’t stop searching for Darien’s killer. And I won’t stop advocating for life-saving laws that will help prevent tragedies like ours. It’s time Congress started listening to our demands.
