I remember being a kid and getting frustrated when my parents would keep something away from me. Greetings Everyday Spy, I remember being a kid and getting frustrated when my parents would keep something away from me. First it was the movie ‘Predator.’ I wanted to see that movie so badly when it hit VHS in 1987! Arnold, the jungle, and an alien hunter. My heart still races… Later it was the radio show hosted by famous shock-jock Howard Stern. I heard rumors from friends that made my adolescent mind giddy with excitement. But mom and dad were like a brick wall I couldn’t bypass. Even as I was preparing to leave home and go college they prevented me from accessing Playboy magazine, Friday night highschool football post-game parties, and of course ‘Skin’emax (officially known as ‘Cinemax’, but you and I know the truth!). Well now I’m the parent - and my son has passed through the same age I was when I wanted to watch Predator in the movie theater. And I find myself scrolling past and saying ‘no’ to all sorts of titles on Netflix and Amazon Prime. I’ve been really lucky that he doesn’t complain much, and we always find a better family alternative to whatever horror/thriller catches his attention (thank you parental controls!) But standing in the checkout line one day I heard him singing to himself… “Stacy's mom has got it goin' on - She's all I want - And I've waited for so long - Stacy, can't you see, you're just not the girl for me - I know it might be wrong but - I'm in love with Stacy's mom” I asked him what he was singing, and he told me it was one of his favorite songs. Then he told me some others: Raise a Glass, Indestructible, Shape of You, Call Me Maybe, Jessie’s girl. And I realized that there is [no keeping this kid away from discovery.]( The films, songs, and books that shaped me are destined to be discovered by him. Just like I found my way to Predator, Howard Stern, Playboy, and even Cinemax, despite my parent’s every effort.
