I'm a former covert spy - I have lots of skeletons hidden in lots of closets. Greetings Everyday Spy, I'm a former covert spy - I have lots of skeletons hidden in lots of closets. It goes with the territory. But I can't help but laugh when I open my inbox and find a ham-handed social engineering email... Like I did today, titled: "I have your dirty zoom." If you haven't gotten one of the many flavors of this email going around yet, you will. I've seen 4 variations myself! Here is a quick guide to recognizing them for what they are - a bad phishing scam from non-native English speakers (most likely out of central Europe): - Look for bad use of the English language. Poor grammar or incorrect word use is a dead giveaway that you are being scammed (especially if the email tries to look 'official') - Look for way too much explanation. Bad guys always get stuck in long monologues, especially when they try to run a scam. (Because more words are supposed to make you feel more fear.) - Look for impossibly complex instructions. If you have to pay in Bitcoin, foreign currency, or some special online portal, you know you have a scam. Okay, without further ado, here is the most recent 'dirty zoom' email scam sent my way... Enjoy! ---------------BEGIN MESSAGE-------------- Hello! I have very bad news for you dirty zoomer. I have hacked into your OS and got full access to your zoom camera and account xxxxxx@everydayspy.com So, you can change the password, yes... But you are to late. I have the proof of you touching yourself many dirty times without knowing your zoom was recording. I am control your zoom now! In the software of the router, through which you went online, was a vulnerability. I just hacked this router and placed my malicious code on it. But I looked at the sites that you regularly visit, and I was shocked by what I saw!!! I'm talk you about sites for adults. I want to say - you are a BIG pervert. Your fantasy is shifted far away from the normal course! And I got an idea.... I made a screenshot of the adult sites where did you enjoy (do you understand what it is about, huh?). After that I made video (using the camera of your device) Turned out amazing! You are so spectacular! I'm know that you would not like to show these video to your friends, relatives or colleagues. I think $1250(USD) is a very, very small amount for my silence. Besides, I have been spying on you for so long, having spent a lot of time! Pay ONLY in Bitcoins! My BTC wallet: bc1qlq7z2xy4tw0wd46lnsexq9fgqquuryus2x5txw You do not know how to use bitcoins? Enter a query in any search engine: "how to replenish btc wallet". It's extremely easy For this payment I give you two days (48 hours). As soon as this letter is opened, the timer will work. After payment, my dirty video with your enjoys will be self-destruct automatically. If I do not receive from you the specified amount, then your device will be locked, and all your contacts will receive a screenshots with your "enjoys". I hope you understand your situation. - Do not try to contact me (this is not feasible, sender address is randomly generated) - Various security services will not help you; formatting a disk or destroying a device will not help, since your data is already on a remote server. This way you will no longer fall into a similar situation. Do not hold evil! I just do my job. Have a nice day! ---------------END MESSAGE-------------- I showed you [how to spot and counter social engineering threats]( way more advanced than this one. But this gave me a pretty good laugh. Don't think for a second that your secrets are darker than anyone else’s. Fear is a tool of the ignorant for the ignorant. And you and I hold ourselves to much higher standards than that. I'll invest in Bitcoin when I can use it to buy you a beer. Until then, I'm sticking to US greenbacks!
