The Day You Leave CIA

I recently got a secure, encrypted call from a friend still serving undercover at CIA. Greetings Everyday Spy, I recently got a secure, encrypted call from a friend still serving undercover at CIA. He was in-between ops, transitioning from one name to another, and took 10 minutes to call me. We shared updates about his kids, my kids, and how crazy and wonderful our wives were. While we were both military veterans and covert CIA intel operators, our field experiences were mirror images of each other. I specialized in the Far East (the ‘Dragon’); he specialized in Eastern Europe (the ‘Bear’). I operated with my wife undercover; his undercover wife was his gateway into CIA. I left CIA in 2014 to start a new life; he started a new life with CIA in 2014. Our friendship began when we were connected by a talented operator who knew us both. But covert missions and secret skills weren’t the thing that made our friendship strong. We became fast friends because we both fully believed that we had to live this one life -- this one-way trip on a big, round rock -- to its fullest. And as our families grew, we became even more committed to living life without limits, without boundaries, and without compromises. There comes a time in every CIA officer’s life when you realize that you have to make a hard decision: - Put CIA before your life, your family, and your dreams, or… - … don’t. You already know the choice my wife and I made. Turns out, my friend on the other end of the phone made the same decision. His last day at CIA is next Monday. The two best days in any CIA officer’s life are the day you start at CIA, and the day you leave. But as happy as both days are, they also hurt. Lying as a profession means lying to everyone who knows you, trusts you, and loves you. And the day you leave covert service, you leave behind the only people who understand the sacrifices you made for your nation. As you read this today, you know the challenges that come with ambition, responsibility, and commitment. And you know the pain of having to choose between yourself, or others; your passion, or your job; your obligations, or your freedom. The most powerful truth that CIA teaches you is that knowledge, training, and experience make the difference between success and struggle. And the day you leave CIA, you know how to find success anywhere you choose.
