My kids are thrilled every time I get new spy gear for my clients and my students. Greetings Everyday Spy, My kids are thrilled every time I get new spy gear for my clients and my students. Recently, I received a sample of UHF 2-way radios with covert earpieces. The kids quickly volunteered to be my testing partners. 2-way radios are a challenge no matter where you go: forest, city, theme park, ski slope, etc. They always work well when you test them close together. Everyone smiles and gets excited. Then just a few minutes after the group goes their separate ways, radio signals get weaker and comms turn stressful. At CIA, we always did tech-checks before we deployed down-range. But the way we tested tech was different from the average police or security unit. Yes, we tested in the field. But we also did something called ‘boundary testing’ - a process where we would test the equipment in non-traditional environments. Rather than test equipment for a few minutes or even a few hours, we’d put it under stress for weeks or months. We’d push battery life to the final few bars, in extreme cold, in the rain,.. You know - like the way your grandparents used to have to walk to school; uphill both ways! Whether it was a 2-way radio, a handheld weapon, a satellite link, or a mobile computer, everything got slammed, splashed, smashed and sand-blasted. And 90% of the time, gear would fail. I’ve seen night-vision goggles fog up, secret compartments seize shut, hand-held transmitters misfire garbled signals, and engine blocks crack. And 100% of the time, broken test equipment gives me a feeling of relief. Because it didn’t happen in the field. Interestingly, when equipment survives the testing period it does not give spies confidence in the model or brand. Instead, we all try to connive our way into taking the sample unit with us - because THAT’S THE ONE UNIT WE KNOW WE CAN TRUST! (Turns out covert agencies aren’t that different from high school sports. We don’t want anyone to wash our lucky socks or change to a new gatorade flavor before the big game.) When the kids and I test gear, it’s much less extreme - but we still push it pretty hard. We give it to my youngest daughter to smash, drop and throw around. We run down batteries and push range limits. We leave stuff on the car dashboard under direct Florida sunlight and stick gear in the freezer overnight. Some of it breaks. Most of it doesn’t. And it’s always fun to see my son’s eyes light up when a freezing cold 2-way radio chirps… “Good copy, Eagle. Over” Godspeed, #EverydaySpy P.S. - [Your life of adventure, meaning, and purpose is one click away. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
