America’s favorite Virginian was actually an Red-Coat officer serving the King of England in 1754 when he ambushed a French platoon and kicked off the French and Indian War. Until just a few years ago, history was blind to the fact that Washington played such an important role in what would become the Seven Years War between Britain and France. Just a year later, Washington was serving as the executive officer to British General Braddock during the famous ‘Wilderness’ campaign. It was during this campaign - at an outpost on the Monongahela river in Pennsylvania - that Washington became Britain's chief celebrity. Routed by a combined French and native-American force (including tribesmen from the Ottawas, Ojibwa and Potawatomis), General Braddock was mortally injured and the British forces overrun. It fell to George Washington to execute either a surrender or a retreat... He managed a skillful retreat and kept British forces an active threat to the French in the area. Afterward, Washington himself delivered Braddock’s eulogy and became a poster-child for British loyalty and courage in the face of new world ‘Savages.’ He developed the foundation for modern-day espionage and launched covert influence campaigns that pitted native-American tribes against each other from New York to West Virginia. In the end, he became one of the key players that turned the tide of battle in favor of Britain and allowed them to win the Seven Years War against France. It was Washington’s incredible reputation - in France, Britain, and the American Colonies - that led to secret French support and the final Colonial victory during the revolutionary war. Imagine Britain's shame when one of their favorite sons turned against them in 1776. And similarly, France’s excitement to undermine the British crown after their own humiliating defeat at the hands of the same man - General George Washington.
