Here’s what it was REALLY about… [Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, President Biden and Xi Jinping shared a gourmet lunch yesterday while discussing the end of the world. I’m only joking about the last part… Biden and Xi’s ‘candid’ meeting brought results, but not quite the ones everyone was hoping for. While your kids might be excited about the return of pandas to American zoos, there were some more pressing matters discussed between the two leaders. 1. Biden and Xi agreed to resume military-to-military comms. This is the most significant agreement from the 2.5-hour conversation. China and the US had previously severed military comms in 2020. As tensions heat up in the South China Sea, communication is key to avoiding tragic mistakes. Both leaders know this, and neither want to deal with the political and economic fallout of direct conflict. 2. Xi agreed to curb fentanyl trade. The illegal fentanyl trade is haunting every major city and destroying the lives of countless Americans. It’s no wonder that media outlets are celebrating this as a major breakthrough. But the real story is that this is almost an implicit acknowledgement of China weaponizing the fentanyl trade. In 2020, China suspended all counter-narcotics and law enforcement cooperation with the United States. Which also happened to be the worst year for the fentanyl crisis in the US. 3. Biden asked Xi to temper Russian and Iranian war efforts This conversation went nowhere fast. It was reported that Biden did all the talking and Xi did all the listening, without agreeing to do anything about Russia and Iran. China is gaining more than anyone by letting Russia, Iran, and their proxies duke it out in Europe and the Middle East. With China’s plausible deniability in the conflicts, they have no reason to interfere… yet. While the talks had results, we’re not likely to see any significant change in US-China Relations. Which begs the question… Why did both leaders agree to meet in the first place? This meeting did more for the leaders' personal problems than for the countries’ diplomatic ones. And both are facing significant pressures at home. Biden needed a win heading into an increasingly difficult election cycle. This meeting will serve as proof of his ‘personal diplomacy’ approach actually working. Xi has been under immense pressure when it comes to foreign policy and China’s failing economy. Xi will use this meeting to prove that he is in control of China’s foreign policy and that even President Biden respects him. With his foreign policy ‘under control’ he will be able to focus his efforts on the economy. While pandas, drugs, and avoiding WWIII are all interesting – they’re not at the heart of the talks. And the news media won’t tell you because they’re not trained to see it.
