I did not see that coming⦠Or did I? [Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, Elon Musk is once again under fire for violating an unspoken âruleâ in Western media. YOU DONâT CRITICIZE UKRAINE! Musk tweeted a picture of Zelenskyy visibly strained, with veins bulging from his neck, and a captain that read: âWhen it's been 5 minutes and you haven't asked for a billion dollars in aid.â When you cut through the sarcasm, the heart of his argument is this: âI do not agree with the amount of financial aid given to Ukraine.â Immediately, politicians, talking heads, and everyday citizens reached into the [political playbook]( to fire shots back at Musk. Whether they realize it or not, theyâre engaging in an attempt to shape the narrative⦠The question is, does the narrative hold up logically? Most of Muskâs critics rely on the pathos fallacy â also called an appeal to emotion. - âUkrainians are killed daily by Russia.â
- âWe are fighting for our lives, for our families, for our country, for our freedom.â
- âNot everyone is able to realize what the daily bombardments and cries of children losing their parents are.â These claims arenât always wrong in their own right, but theyâre not logically consistent with Muskâs criticism. Instead, theyâre an attempt to manipulate the argument by appealing to emotion rather than using logic or reason. Musk also faced a fair amount of straw man fallacies. - âAny support for Russia is a direct investment in war, genocide, destruction of the free world, escalation, and the right to impunity.â
- â[This] is a direct encouragement of Russian propaganda that justifies mass violence and destruction.â
- âWhen it's been 5 minutes and you haven't spread Russian propaganda.â When you build a straw man, you sidestep the original argument and equate it to something that is easier to attack and tear down. While Muskâs meme mocks Ukraine's requests for aid, these critics built a separate argument and attacked that instead â that Musk was supporting genocide and Russian propaganda. Donât think that Iâm supporting Musk here, because he is just as guilty of the fragile arguments his critics make against him. At the height of his Twitter war over the meme, he stated: âWhy do so many American politicians from both parties care 100 times more about the Ukraine border than the USA border?â This is called a false dichotomy â when a complex situation is oversimplified by presenting it as if there are only two possible options. We all know that it's possible to care about multiple issues at the same time, equally and in different ways, for different reasons. The truth is, weâre all guilty of doing this⦠In our arguments, our stories, and our own internal dialog. Whatâs important is that [we are aware of it when it happens.]( Both when others do it and when we do it ourselves.
