The House Speaker was voted out of power for the first time ever… [Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, The US just made history again… And not in a good way. For the first time ever, the House Speaker was voted out of power. The closest we ever got before was 100 years ago, making this a huge deal in Washington. Republican Kevin McCarthy got the axe after a grueling battle to avoid a government shutdown. His biggest sin: working with Democrats to pass a temporary spending bill. It was one of his own – Republican Matt Gaetz – that led the mob to oust the disgraced politician. Gaetz and 7 other Republicans joined every House Democrat to end McCarthy’s term as speaker in a 216 to 210 vote. Shortly after McCarthy’s removal, Gaetz made some comments that I had to share with you because they were classic examples from the [political playbook.]( In a 6-minute interview, Gaetz managed to spend five and a half minutes sidestepping the actual issue while stirring up voters. For those of us that are more interested in the truth behind the spin, let’s dig into his comments and see what plays he was using Keep in mind, the original reason given for McCarthy’s ousting was that he broke his word by making a deal with Democrats. “It’s to the benefit of this country that we have a better Speaker of the House than Kevin McCarthy.” Essentially, he is saying if McCarthy remains as Speaker, then America loses. This is a classic example of the slippery slope fallacy. Asserting that if one thing is allowed, it will only lead to a cascade of negative events. This sort of claim is inherently unprovable. “Kevin McCarthy is a creature of the swamp.” This calls back to Trump’s war cry of “drain the swamp” – to get rid of the deep state career politicians that are destroying the country. This is purely an ad hominem attack. It’s an attack on the person's character instead of addressing the argument itself. And it’s in stark contrast to one of Gaetz’s previous comments: “This isn't a critique of the individual – it's a critique of the job. The job hasn't been done.” “He made an agreement in January regarding the way Washington would work, and he violated that agreement. We are $33 trillion in debt. We are facing $2.2 trillion annual deficits. We face a de-dollarization globally that will crush Americans, working-class Americans.” Gaetz started this off by addressing the original argument, but quickly devolved into another common fallacy. Here, Gaetz relies on the red herring fallacy. Introducing irrelevant information into an argument to distract from the real issue. While the national debt and power of the dollar are important, tying those problems directly to McCarthy is a stretch in the scenario. Politicians do not want you to know they are doing this. Because then they can’t stir up your emotions and direct your vote if you know their playbook.
