When biology and ethics collide… [Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, This weekend, I had to have a hard conversation about sex. And it wasn’t the birds and bees talk you had with your dad… A friend of mine was telling me that Russell Brand was accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl. And the media went haywire. If that’s not bad enough, a recent poll from Great Britain showed that 33% of men believed this age gap was acceptable. And so did 15% of women. My friend couldn’t understand how this could be… To her, these men were clearly predators out to hurt young women. Like most people today, she wasn’t separating ethics from biology in her mind. This is a subtle skill that has been lost with the rise of social media. About 100 years ago, Western culture mostly decided that it was unethical to sexually lust after young people – and for good reason, too. Our brains don’t fully develop until our mid-20s. Which means young people are not good at understanding the long-term consequences of their behaviors. In a world of predators, that makes them vulnerable and in need of protection. However, this is at odds with another biological truth – fertility. The trope of the “biological clock” is a trope for a reason… Women are born with a set number of viable eggs, and as soon as their period starts, they start losing one per month. Unlike men, who produce an unbelievable number of sperm throughout their life. According to the biological data, women are most fertile during their late teens to mid-20s. That’s why it wasn’t surprising to me that 33% of men were okay with the age difference in Brand’s relationship. According to the law of averages, some of the respondents would be disgusting, predatory psychopaths… but very few. Most of them are normal men living productive lives. And their biological drive dictates that women in their late teens to mid-20s are healthy, viable reproductive partners. To be clear, I’m not defending Brand or saying it's okay to take advantage of young women. Kids deserve protection in every way. What I am saying is that there is a clear difference between biological truths and ethical opinions. And that is a hard conversation the media can’t have. And it’s leaving the next generation more and more confused about sex. If this news took you by surprise, then I suggest you [dig into Sex & Spies](.
