The news is not lying to you. [Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, The news is not lying to you. Let’s get that clear right now… What it’s actually doing is echoing your beliefs, bias, and interests back at you. And they can do that without lying! To show you the difference, let’s break into 2 headlines from the weekend… But first, we have to check our feelings at the door and look at this through the eyes of a CIA analyst… Headline 1 Three reasons Biden’s problems appear to be overblown – CNN, published on 9/17/23 This article delves into the common criticisms of Biden’s presidential tenure: inflation, Hunter Biden, and possible impeachment. At each turn, the article makes a point that these things aren't as bad as they seem. Every argument is supported with solid evidence and facts (including polls from their rivals at Fox News). If you lean right, you’d see this headline and think, “NO WAY! Biden is the worst president in recent history, and his issues are worse than what the media reports.” If you lean left, you’d read the article and feel a bit at ease… Biden’s not the best, but he’s doing okay. Despite how it may seem to some, there is nothing factually false in this article. Headline 2 Speaker McCarthy says Hunter Biden 'will be subpoenaed' by GOP when timing is right: 'We only follow facts’ – Fox, published on 9/17/23 This article makes the exact opposite argument: Biden is in serious trouble, corruption is rampant, and America is at risk. Each claim is supported by direct quotes from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Again, there is nothing factually incorrect about what the article reports. They stick to analyzing McCarthy’s comments and report on the progress of the inquiry. However, like the CNN article, it is written in a way that appeals to its reader base: the right-leaning voter. At the same time, it repulses the left-leaning voter. The news may not be LYING, but they are using tricks from Marketing 101. Everything they do is designed to get you to click, read, and share… Which is why getting the truth isn’t about finding a news source you trust. After all, business isn’t reporting… reporting is a business. Instead, you have to learn to TRUST a system that gives you reliable facts… No matter the source. At CIA, we were taught to read news using the [ARC Process.]( This three-step system gives me reliable facts from any news source. It’s what I use to inform my podcasts, newsletters, and personal day-to-day debates. You can [learn the ARC Process]( with the Analyst Action Kit. I break down every step in detail, so you can read the news like an elite analyst.
