Alai is my dancer; anytime there is music, her body can’t help but move. Greetings Everyday Spy

Alai is my dancer; anytime there is music, her body can’t help but move. Greetings Everyday Spy, I spent 15 minutes the other morning trying to get my daughter Alai’s hair into a semi-acceptable top bun before she went to her ballet class. The whole time I was pulling, tugging, and brushing through her light brown hair, she kept grunting quietly. For sure I was causing her pain and discomfort - but she didn’t say anything. My dad-hands are better built for weekend wrestling and tickling than primping and preening. Alai is my dancer; anytime there is music, her body can’t help but move. My mother was bitten by the same bug, but Alai has grace and coordination that my mom -- and the rest of my family -- are lacking. Whether we are listening to famous ballets (Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Coppelia) or modern rock and metal from Fallout Boy or Disturbed, that little girl finds a way to make the music look beautiful. But her leotard and ballet slippers are only one part of a much more complex courageous creature - a graceful warrior. Because the same girl that stands in third position before every song has taken down playground bullies nearly twice her size. She has stared down growling animals and frustrated grown adults to the point where they storm away in a huff. I’d love to take credit for her fearless nature, but she earned it on her own. She was born with a spider-sense for vulnerable areas. Playground experimentation and living-room tussles helped her discover the throat punch, the ear box, and knee shots to the groin. She can make and break choke holds and has the muscle density of a quarter horse. All packed into a cute, sweet little package that makes my heart ache for movie cuddles and book time. Alai reminds me that we all have more warrior inside us than what we show. You have killer instincts, just like Alai… but you were conditioned to cover them up over time. Social norms, public schools, and the grind of the work/family convinced you that you had to change if you wanted to ‘fit in.’ [When you were younger, you had no boundaries -- no limits.]( Now you are older, and you see barriers everywhere; your job, your age, your gender, etc. Trust Alai and me... you still have a graceful warrior inside you. It’s just waiting for you to ignore the tradition, expectations, and obligations forced on you. Godspeed, #EverydaySpy P.S. - [Your life of adventure, meaning, and purpose is one click away.
