After coming back from the Middle East, I was excited to jump into a whole new health routine. Greetings Everyday Spy, After coming back from the Middle East, I was excited to jump into a whole new health routine. Living in the desert takes a lot out of you. The heat, the sun, and the lack of water are only the beginning. The real damage comes from the way the three combine to zap your energy. When your energy starts to wane, you turn to caffeine and sugar to try to stay focused. And it only gets worse from there. 'The more extreme the environment, the less healthy the lifestyle.' That's a common mantra for field officers preparing to deploy into extreme cold, heat, isolation, or threat-level. I was reminded of that mantra - for myself and my family - after we came back from the UAE. Leaning on caffeine and calories for a year had wrecked my body’s natural biorhythm. The same was true for Jihi. We kept the kids caffeine-free, but their sleep cycles and other systems were rocked after acclimating to the Arab outdoors. Back in the States, we both jumped into new workouts and eating routines. We got the kids back into a healthy groove with sleep, play, and learning. And as we crossed into our 40s, we kept weight off that friends and family did not. The average person gains the majority of their weight between the ages of 20-40. If you are in that age range, you are likely already seeing the impact. Building a career, a business, or a family has the same effect on you as the desert heat. It zaps your energy and leaves you tired. As you age, your body processes fat differently - decreasing the rate that fat burns and increasing the areas where you store fat. It sucks, but it’s science. And unless you choose to work with your age along the way, you will end up looking and feeling a whole lot worse than you ever imagined. Your body doesn’t care that you are a parent, an entrepreneur, or a fast-rising corporate star. It knows you are getting older; it knows your metabolism is dropping; and it knows your lean muscle is deteriorating from non-use. Your personal goals matter to your mind… not your body. But you can make your body one of your goals. That is how I maintain my weight, my physical health, and how my peers in the field do the same thing every day.
