A better way to relax in social situations Greetings Everyday Spy, Alcohol is a major cause of death

A better way to relax in social situations [Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, Alcohol is a major cause of death in the United States that could be avoided. Every year over 88k people die because of alcohol, making it the third-highest cause of preventable death in the country. We’re also learning that the bad stuff even moderate drinking does to both mental and physical health is worse than we used to think. It kind of makes you wonder why so many people keep drinking. It’s simple: Drinking works. Alcohol helps you feel more relaxed. It reduces stress. You become more open to talking and having fun with others. But there’s a huge catch that you may have experienced: Having one (or five) too many can result in terrible decisions. Maybe you've had one too many drinks at a company party and woke up the next day not realizing you told your boss what you really think of them. Don't worry, it happens to the best of us… But the fact is that there are ways you can [skyrocket your social confidence without having to rely on booze.]( At CIA, I had to be charming and likable to get near to - and win over - a target. And I sure couldn’t knock a few back to calm my nerves. One technique we were taught to win people over is mirroring, and you can do it any time: Let's say you're at a party or gathering. Pay close attention to someone’s body language, gestures, and speech patterns. For example, notice if they lean forward when speaking, use their hands expressively, or have a particular way of phrasing things. Once you've observed their behaviors, try subtly mirroring them. If they lean forward, you can also lean in slightly. If they use hand gestures, incorporate similar gestures into your own communication. If they have a distinctive way of speaking, like using certain phrases or vocal inflections, try gently matching their speech patterns. You can experiment with mirroring in different places, like at work or with friends and family. The key is to be respectful, genuine, and adaptable. The more you practice, the better you get at building rapport and charisma without any next-day regrets - or blackouts.
