It’s good for the business world… [Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, I read an interesting story about Spartans… After invading southern Greece and conquering other key city-states, Philip II of Macedon turned his eyes to Sparta. He sent his emissary to Sparta with a note: “Should I come as a friend or foe?” The Spartans replied: “Neither.” Phillip was enraged and once again sent his emissary, but this time with the message: “If I invade Laconia, you will be destroyed, never to rise again!” The Spartan elders again replied with a single word: “If.” What a baller move. 🙂 Their replies are known as Laconian phrases - a form of speech and writing in the Greek region of Laconia (which included Sparta). Spartans were people of few words. Being clear and getting to the point as fast as possible was the only thing acceptable for the nation of warriors. There’s another famous example when a Spartan mother was escorting her son to the battle. As she was giving him his shield, the only thing she said was: “With it, or on it.” OK, I agree… They took this to the extreme. However, the fact is that clear and concise communication is one of the most important traits in today’s business world. People are busy. They don’t have time for chit-chatting. But that’s what most people do - they talk… and talk… and talk… And they take forever to make their point, or tell you what you needed to hear. So you have to know how to get people to say what they have to say as fast and as clearly as possible - but without offending them. This was especially important in the field, where you know someone is watching you, and your asset is a chatty person. Knowing how to make people get to the point fast saved me a ton of time (and probably my life a few times). Now, I want to teach you that same skill.
