[Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, It can be hard to believe that in a modern world, some ancient customs are still alive and well. When these customs contradict our personal values, they are even harder to understand. But traditions that have survived for hundreds of years - passed from generation to generation - are hard to break. Logic, knowledge, and even the law, struggle to combat them. One tragic custom that has been buried under the 24 hour news cycle is known as ‘Honor Killing.’ In July 2021, a Syrian girl was killed by her family when she refused to marry her cousin in Hasakah province. In March 2021, a girl was beheaded in Uttar Pradesh province, India, by her father when she was found in a ‘compromising position’ with an unmarried man. An honor killing in Iran in May 2020 made international headlines when a teenage girl named Romina Ashrafi was killed by her father as an act of ‘honor.’ In 2019, police records showed 24 legal honor killings in India alone. The practice is hundreds of years old and active in many of America's closest allies – including the UK, India, Pakistan, Albania, and Brazil. It has even happened in the United States, with the most famous example being Noor Almaleki who was killed by her father in Arizona in 2012. Honor killings occur when one or more people kill a family member to restore ‘honor’ to their family name. This violence most often occurs against young women by older men (fathers, brothers, etc.), but is also common against men and older women. To truly fall under ‘honor code,’ the honor offense must publicly disgrace a family according to cultural customs. This can include adultery, premarital sex, homosexuality, or even verbal misstatements in the world’s strictest cultures. Because many cultures still derive family names through paternal lineage, the disgrace can only be restored by male family members. The driving force behind this sad violence is closely tied to the changing nature of our world. The Internet and smartphones have connected people across cultural and educational divides. Underserved and oppressed groups can learn, connect, and encourage one another in ways never-before possible. But even as younger generations adapt and grow with technology, older generations charged to maintain honor are constantly threatened.
