I spent my spy career enjoying sunshine in some of the most beautiful places on the planet. Greetings Everyday Spy, I spent my spy career enjoying sunshine in some of the most beautiful places on the planet. It was a huge change after growing up in cold, grey Pennsylvania and then serving in secret underground bunkers with the US Air Force. But it was a change I gladly accepted. Especially when I started operating in tandem with Jihi and got paid to take a pretty girl to a different beach every few weeks! The worst part of my CIA time was when Langley called me back home to northern VA during the winter months. Cold, wet, gray, and over populated. I know there are people who say they love living there… and they are lying. When you are young, your body thrives in different environmental extremes. I’ve watched my son go from sub-zero temps to desert heat exceeding 125℉ without issue. My daughter is half his age and has done even better! My own military and CIA career was a blur of short-term missions where I often had sunscreen rolled into a parka in my suitcase. But age and success present two related problems: slower physical recovery and more admin work. And that combo is a recipe for physical injury. For me, it happened when I was assigned a 6-month rotation at CIA Headquarters working with US Special Forces, but trapped behind a desk. I was 33 years old working 10-14 hours a day, skipping meals and falling out of my workout routine. In an effort to get back into a healthy groove without being gone too long, I started running a 3 mile loop we have on the CIA campus… but I would skip my warm-up and my cool-down. I strained my left and right Soleus (inner calf muscle) on the same day at nearly the same time. It took 6 limping weeks to recover, and I am still plagued by recurring pulls every few years. Why? Because success brings slower recovery and more admin work. And it only gets worse each year. The awesome trainers at CIA helped me develop [my own Kick-Start Routine]( to properly warm my body up before strong exercise. And it has served me immensely. Now the season I look forward to exercising most is winter - when mother nature uses cold temps to keep muscle swelling down and Jack Frost chases most people indoors. If you find yourself hounded by success, use my Kick-Start Routine to keep yourself fit, strong, and injury free! Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
