I build a new HIIT workout routine every year to get me through holidays and long vacations. Greetings Everyday Spy, I build a new HIIT workout routine every year to get me through holidays and long vacations. I suffer from persistent calf-pulls that keep me from enjoying daily runs. HIIT is my way of keeping up my aerobic exercise while I cross-trained my calves back to strength. The workouts are grueling most days, but something totally unexpected started happening that kept me going. The kids started to do the workout with me! Alai - my youngest daughter - joined me first. Early on, she would cheer for me and tell me she loved me while she watched me jump around, run suicides, and groan out loud in pain and exhaustion. Then one day she brought her own water bottle and just jumped in! Sina - my older son - came next. Once he saw his sister and dad drenched in sweat doing starburst pushups, he wanted a piece too! Neither of them makes the full 40 minutes with me, but their company is a huge morale lift. With the kids joining me, my HIIT workouts have moved almost exclusively indoors - to a big matted play/exercise area in our living room. I open the sliding glass door and some windows to enjoy the fresh morning air. And with 3 people’s worth of sweat and tears afterward, my cool-down routine now ends with a mop and bucket. I recently told a good friend about my dad-gym and my mopping routine. She called me ‘domesticated’ and joked about what my ‘secret agent’ self would say if he could see me now. I wasn’t sure how to answer that, so I asked my son Sina what he thought about all of us working out together. “Don’t tell anyone, dad,” he said, “but we are a family of secret ninjas in disguise!” I couldn’t have said it better myself. Wherever you are on your fitness journey right now, my little ninja family is right there with you! And if you want to know why I always advocate muscle growth over fat loss, [I’m happy to tell you](. Stay strong, stay healthy, and stay fit. We have big adventures still ahead of us...
