I recently spent most of a day comparing notes with former intel officers from FBI, NSA, CIA, and DIA at a major law firm in Tampa. Greetings Everyday Spy, I recently spent most of a day comparing notes with former intel officers from FBI, NSA, CIA, and DIA at a major law firm in Tampa. The main topic of discussion was cyber crime based on the dark web and funded with cryptocurrency. The FBI led the discussion, with multiple examples of drug, human trafficking, and crimes against children operations that had been successfully disrupted by private intel-enabled support. I am often asked my position on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and my opinion is not popular with the mainstream. But it's the same opinion all professional intelligence officers share. More than 73% of premeditated illicit crime starts on the dark web and is funded by 3 primary cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Monero). When you have put your life on the line for another human being who was bought, sold, or abused in exchange for one of these currencies, you quickly see the fundamental flaw in crypto as a currency. Trade has always been based on mutual respect. And currencies have always been founded on accountability... But cryptocurrencies do not value either respect or accountability. In fact, they advertise themselves as a way to bypass both. And even though intel experts agree that cryptocurrencies will continue to grow in popularity and value, we know they will never become a mainstream tool of trade. First, they do not lend themselves to micro transactions - the most common type of trade on the planet. The average person has 2 transactions per day, both averaging less than $15. The same transaction in Bitcoin would cost more in processing fees than the sum of both purchases! Second, human survival instincts are wired to trust tangible resources above all else. Even the most fervent cryptocurrency advocates praise crypto because of its value represented in US dollars. Think about that… they do not value the currency on its own - they value its equivalent in a tangible currency! I have personal and ethical reasons for not investing in cryptocurrency - not to mention the innumerable times Jihi and I faced danger funded by crypto-backed purchases. But my values are not intended to sway your decisions. If you choose to invest in Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ripple or any of the many cryptocurrencies out there, go for it. I wish you high returns and massive wealth! But if you are hesitant and skeptical about the use of cryptocurrencies, your instincts are not misleading you. The most objective minds in National Security stand with you.
