Combining a chronograph and an annual calendar. Presenting Carl F. Bucherer’s new Heritage BiCo

Combining a chronograph and an annual calendar. Presenting Carl F. Bucherer’s new Heritage BiCompax Annual The successful watch with a chronograph and an annual calendar has now been released with an ‘inverse panda’ face, limited to 888 pieces Some creations simply stand the test of time—in music, cinema, fashion, and, of course, watchmaking. The Heritage BiCompax Annual by Carl F. Bucherer is proof of that on many levels. It is highly functional and utterly precise. The elegant chronograph with an annual calendar celebrates the design and savoir faire of the early 1950s, harmoniously merging vintage charm with the brand’s contemporary approach to the art of watchmaking. Now, two years after the original debut in 2019, the Lucerne-based watchmakers have introduced a new high-contrast version of the popular Heritage BiCompax Annual. In a limited edition of only 888 pieces, and featuring a deep-black dial with silver-coloured sub-dials, this new version is a first trailblazer for further highlights that watch lovers around the world can expect from Carl F. Bucherer’s ever-growing Heritage collection. Let’s take a closer look at this striking new edition. Bucherer was established in 1888, when Carl-Friedrich Bucherer opened his first store for watches and jewellery in Lucerne, laying the basis for the company. His business grew quickly and he was dedicated to manufacturing timepieces and jewellery, in-house, from the very beginning. Over the 130-plus years since, a wide array of exceptional designs and technical achievements have emerged from Carl F. Bucherer’s workshops, as the in-house brand has expanded. The Heritage collection celebrates this multifaceted history with exceptional limited-edition timepieces. The latest addition to the collection takes its inspiration from the chronographs of the 1940s. Known for athleticism and dynamism at the time, it was then that the chronograph watch started to became hugely popular. In the ateliers of Carl F. Bucherer, a whole range of wristwatches with stopwatch functionality were produced as early as the late 1940s. Chronographs with bicompax displays were particularly sought-after. This type of harmonious dial design features two sub-dials symmetrically positioned on the horizontal central axis of the watch face. It became the hallmark of one standout timepiece in the Carl F. Bucherer archives dating back to approximately 1950. Its sporty, elegant design fast became an icon for the brand. Sized at only 34mm in diameter, the case’s warm gold tone was complemented by a pink-champagne-coloured dial featuring telemeter and tachymeter scales and a russet leather strap. This stylish classic chronograph served as the design inspiration for the modern Heritage BiCompax Annual. Adding to the successful Heritage BiCompax Annual series It was in 2019 when Carl F. Bucherer first launched the modern Heritage BiCompax Annual. Directly drawing from the gold and champagne tones of the 1950 watch, there was one version in steel and gold, with a soft brown strap and a pale, champage-hued dial. A companion piece with a complete black-and-white palette was also released. With a steel case and a black strap, the dial featured a ‘panda’ layout, with black sub-dials on a silvery main dial. Reversing that layout, this new version of the Heritage BiCompax Annual is another historically-inspired addition to series. “This unique collection is our tribute to more than 13 decades of watchmaking art. And we look forward to further expanding this line of limited-edition-only timepieces,” says Sascha Moeri, CEO of Carl F. Bucherer. With this new model, Carl F. Bucherer responds to excitement that the first two versions of the Heritage BiCompax Annual garnered when launched in 2019. “The feedback we received two years ago was overwhelming. Customers and fans of the brand have been asking us ever since to let this reference live on with further variants. With the new version, we are responding to that request,” adds Moeri. The overall layout is practically identical to the earlier models with its snailed sub-dials—small seconds at three and 30-minute chronograph counter at nine. These two symmetrically arranged silver-coloured sub-dials are positioned on the horizontal central axis of the deep-black galvanised dial. Thereby, the new edition of the Heritage BiCompax reverses the colour concept of the first steel model mentioned above. The dial is framed by a tachymeter scale, which can be used to compute speed, based on travel time, or even measure distance, based on speed. The retro Arabic numerals on the dial are especially inspired by the antiquated watches of yesteryear. What catches your eye almost immediately are the simple, sharp but extremely effective syringe-shaped hands, which have been filled with just the right amount of luminous material for it to be useful in the dark. Now syringe-style hands are quite rare these days, and are hence a perfect distinctive element to have in your watch collection. Apart from the Super-LumiNova that is injected into the hands, it also appears in the form of minute dots around the hour numerals. The titular annual calendar—only to be adjusted once a year, on March 1 Coming to the titular feature of the Heritage BiCompax Annual, the annual calendar is presented in the form of two apertures on the dial. Right below noon sits the big date indicator and lodged very discreetly between the four and five o’clock markers is the month indicator. Since it features the coveted annual calendar complication, it will need only one adjustment a year. It accounts for the differences in the number of days across all months, except for February, so it will need adjusting only on March 1, when the date will not automatically go from the 28th or 29th to the 1st. If you look closer, you will notice that both of the calendar apertures have stepped frames, outlined in white. The attention to detail that the watchmakers have put into every watch is quite impressive, and lends it a very nuanced appeal indeed. An in-house automatic movement that offers a rare complication combination Beating inside is the in-house automatic calibre CFB 1972, with 47 jewels, which can store a 42-hour reserve of power. The watch may look simple, but it packs quite a punch, with chronograph and annual calendar complications—which makes this watch incredibly utilitarian. Very few brands offer a combination of these two features, and even fewer in in this price range. The movement is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback of the watch. The rectangular pushers that activate the chronograph—polished to perfection and slightly rounded near the lugs—add to the vintage appeal. Just like the watches from the 1950s, the case is finished with a double-domed glass, in this case, made from sapphire crystal and treated with an antireflective coating. Paired with the steel case is a black calfskin leather strap with silver-coloured stitching and a folding pin buckle, which perfectly complements the design of the dial. The new timepiece is also available on a sporty and comfortable rubber strap. VIDEO: Discover the details of the new Heritage BiCompax Annual, with a glimpse of how it draws from Carl F.
