With complex tourbillon and chronograph movements. Introducing Angelus watches and their complex tourbillons and chronographs Angelus, the Swiss watchmaking powerhouse—who even once supplied movements to Panerai—is finally in India First established in the late 1800s, Angelus developed their movement-making capabilities in their early years, making great strides with pioneering innovations, and many firsts. They came out with the first chronograph with a calendar, and the first chronograph with a digital date, which we take for granted in watches today. In fact, they’ve had a strong inclination towards chronographs and combinations of complications, since those early years, developing complex movements that the industry took notice of. They even supplied movements to Panerai—the renowned Italian brand of Swiss watches—for the timepieces that Panerai were making for the Italian navy. While the brand was a casualty of the quartz crisis, it was resurrected decades later, in 2011, and was soon taken over by movement manufacturer La Joux Perret—acquired later by the Citizen Watch group. Since then, they have honed and mastered their movement and complication making, and brought their expertise into the 21st century. With even the finishing of components refined and presented in very modern, skeletonised watches, they have managed to stay ahead in the watchmaking game. It is their Urban collection that perfectly represents their savoir faire and their modern capabilities—particularly their U30 Black Titanium and U41 tourbillon piece. Let’s take a closer look at the Urban series and these watches. The Urban collection—the 21st-century Angelus watches In 2015, Angelus unveiled their first timepiece after years of inactivity, at Baselworld—the U10 Tourbillon Lumière, which was a retro-futuristic timepiece in a distinct oval case, with a dead-beat seconds mechanism, and an exceptional power reserve of 90 hours. This was launched as part of their Urban collection—which represents the brand’s foray into the 21st century, without losing their avant-garde spirit while upholding their reputation for innovation. This collection also marked a shift in terms of ditching the dress-watch appeal of their chronographs from yesteryears, and embracing a more sporty design with a primary focus on skeletonisation and incorporating the tourbillon mechanism in all their watches. However, this is not bereft of a seamless melding of the historic design points, and modern watchmaking to produce exquisitely engineered timekeepers. The 47mm black DLC titanium case, with open-worked edges, houses one of the most complex automatic skeletonised movements in the world. In the U30, nothing has been sacrificed in the expression of Angelus’s extreme watchmaking approach, with everything being independently manufactured. The spacious skeletonised structure of the U30 encompasses the case, movement and hands, while the lugs and case middle are marked in the centre, with a recess that extends the skeletonising of the movement. With 350 components, the movement is treated with black DLC and accentuated in grey. The design is an expression of Angelus’s own brand of hyper-technicality; it is the supreme sportiness of an ultra-light split-second chronograph. The A-150 calibre has depth, with the hand fitting, bridges, cog and column wheels, patina and rotor creating a rich layered texture that is truly captivating. MRP: ₹64,70,000 For more information, please call our Luxury Watch Helpline on [+91 8725028885](tel:08725028885), [+91 8725028898](tel:08725028898) [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp]( The U30 chronograph with both split-second and flyback features—a rarity in watchmaking The split-second function allows the central chronograph seconds hand to be split in two, allowing you to time two events that start together. At any moment, the same pusher can bring the two hands back together to the same point. A flyback also allows you to reset and restart timing with a single press, without having to stop and reset the hands. This exceptional feature does not compromise the lines of the U30. The split-second pusher is integrated into the crown at three o’clock, barely protruding from the case. Similarly, the chronograph’s start and reset pushers are very discreet, integrated into the overall line of the U30’s black titanium case middle. The pushers have a short trajectory, requiring up-front design work and adjustment to a degree rarely achieved in watchmaking. It fact, it’s not all that common to find a split-second chronograph combined with a flyback feature—a complex feat that not many are able to achieve, like the calibre A-150 has. The A-150 calibre has been entirely developed, machined, decorated, assembled, adjusted and fitted at the Angelus manufacturing site in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This exclusive movement has been designed with exceptional mechanical and graphic detail in mind. The structure and functions form a coherent whole, highlighting the complications and design of their components. The U30’s functionality and display, with a power reserve indicator Few chronographs also have a power reserve indicator. The traditional display layout leaves little room for an additional gauge. Angelus has placed the indicator at half past seven on the dial, using a subtle asymmetric layout. Tourbillon chronographs itself are anomalies, and tourbillon rattrapantes are even more unique. But for Angelus, integrating a rotary regulating organ into the dense and intense A-150 calibre has posed no problem. In fact, combining chronometer and chronograph, measuring precision times and short times is a logical choice for the U30. Enclosed in a 42mm titanium case, the U41 showcases its own architecture. Unfolding in a series of black and transparent sections, this frame is both minimalistic and graphic. Technical aspects merge with the aesthetic signature in an optimal combination of stability, design and ergonomics. The network of open-worked plates and bridges thus forms and defines the very identity of the U41. On the other, there is the search for a committed style, accompanied by a comfortable and proportionate wearing experience on the wrist. The U41 is a sporty watch, as exemplified by its sculpted rubber strap, notched bezel, titanium case and movement designed in a metallic ‘mesh’ format. The basic idea was to create a light, yet sturdy watch, presenting a pressing need for solidity that required a movement architecture capable of withstanding impacts and cushioning shocks without breaking or being deformed. By enclosing all the main elements, including the wheels and the barrel, between two plates, the movement delivers maximum stability. This A-300 calibre was, in fact, developed as a skeleton movement to begin with. In order to strike the perfect balance between structural solidity and open-worked detailing, Angelus opted for ‘dual-beamed’ plates and bridges. The void that separates the two arms from these supporting elements is studded with jewels that accommodate the wheel axes. All of these components are treated with black ADLC to add contrast and texture. The U41’s high-performance functionality and avant-garde design Angelus movements frequently exhibit 90-hour autonomy, enabled by a balance oscillation speed of 3Hz. For the A-300 calibre, the frequency has been set at 4Hz for 60 hours of power reserve. This higher frequency safeguards the accuracy of the movement under impact, and thus reduces its power reserve. This compromise is a natural continuation of the technical choices Angelus has made for the U41. The U41 comes in two versions: one dressed in orange hues, and another in a range of blues illuminated by flashes of yellow on the minute hand and minute circle. White Super-LumiNova coats the hour and minute hands. The rubber straps work beautifully with the dominant colours. Despite its technical intensity and sporty feel, the U41 remains reasonably sized: a 42mm case with a thickness of 10mm. With the U41, Angelus have delivered perfect harmony between substance and form. And this was the case right from their genesis about 125 years ago, at a time when very few brands had the expertise to manufacture their own movements; generally they would use movements from other brands who had the resources. And Angelus was part of this extraordinary watchmakers’ club. Founded in 1891 by the brothers Albert and Gustav Stolz, who were also former students of noted watchmaker and entrepreneur, Henri Sandoz, the manufacture was nestled in Le Locle, which is the birthplace of Swiss watchmaking. It was here that they pioneered the development of in-house creations, which appealed to collectors all over the globe. And beyond pocketwatches and wristwatches, Angelus had also forged a reputation for creating exceptional chronographs and multi-complication wristwatches, multi-display travel clocks with a generous power reserve of at least eight days, as well as alarm watches and table clocks. In 1930, Angelus developed the smallest eight-day movement in the world—at only 32mm by 21mm (10.5 lines)—with a precision of a little over or under one minute per week. Till date, it remains the smallest movement with an eight-day power reserve, in the world. The high precision of Angelus timepieces was also evident when the brand achieved first-class results at observatory timing competitions, while the superb craftsmanship was recognised by awards from international exhibitions including Paris (1902), Milan (1906), Bern (1914) and Philadelphia (1926). In fact, it’s interesting to note that in 1939, Angelus’ eight-day calibre SF240 was selected by Panerai to equip the watches that it was producing for the Italian navy, and in 1943, the Florentine watchmaker used the Angelus calibre SF215 for its legendary dive timer, the Radiomir Mare Nostrum chronograph with Angelus’ calibre SF215, however, the watch remained in the prototype stage. In fact some of the Panerai watches fitted with Angelus movements have also fared really well at auctions as they have always been highly sought-after by collectors. Angelus and a few of their many firsts - The Chronodato (1942): It was the world’s first series chronograph with a calendar, with an ingenious and technically-supreme manufacture movement that established Angelus as a serious Swiss player, taking haute horlogerie to the next level by revolutionising the chronograph. - The Chrono-Datoluxe (1948): It featured the first big date in a chronograph wristwatch. It was also the first with a digital calendar—years before such a display was established as a standard in watchmaking. - The Datalarm (1956): This was the first watch ever featuring both alarm and date functions. - The Tinkler (1958): The first automatic repeater wristwatch, this was also the first fully waterproof repeater timepiece. Today, with unique, avant-garde watches that are futuristic yet seek inspiration from an era gone by, Swiss watchmaker Angelus are truly a gem in the haute horlogerie business, constantly innovating to blend the very best of classic watchmaking with ultra-modern technology.
